Book excerpt: The Black Phoenix is a novel written by thirteen-year-old Khalif Aziz . In the book, the male protagonist, who takes upon the likeness of the author himself, is a young sorcerer whose age is as old as the pyramids. The 5,672-year-old goes through a form of reincarnation in which he dies in one body and begins a new life in the body of either a direct descendant or a relative. As a sorcerer, he constantly battles the forces of Apep, an evil god that wishes to control not only this universe but all others and let chaos tip the balance that all of these universes rely on. Since Khalifaziz is a human, he must do this in secret while still trying to keep up his cover as a regular human. Cara Marino, the character's best friend, never learns of her friends' abilities (she has other friends who have abilities she doesn't know of as well) until the day that she is attacked by a black Bennu, or a black phoenix. Thus begins an adventure in which both magic and science are large players. Cara is the sister of Phineas Marino, a scientist who worked for the government, working on all sorts of top-secret projects. His most important one, a teleport that sends one into any computer's cyberspace and even into the Internet's cyberspace. Knowing that the government would soon want this project, he hid it from everyone except his little sister, Cara. Then another scientist created a virus, and they fused together in order to form Vesteria, an evil being bent on world domination. Cara and Phineas agree to make sure this never happens, seeing as how it was his invention that caused this trouble; however, Phineas can't fulfill his promise, seeing as he is now dead. Cara then decides to do it all on her own, but then she meets a boy named Khalifaziz, a student of the school built in place of the abandoned laboratory where Phineas worked on his machine in secret. Khalifaziz and his friend Matt decide to help Cara fight Vesteria, leaving out the fact that they are both sorcerers. It turns out that they fight Vesteria better than Cara was ever able to. Unfortunately for them, Apep and Vesteria are sick of losing. One day, after Cara is attacked by the phoenix, Vesteria tries to hack Cara's computer systems. When Cara, Matt, and Shadoe, princess of an alien people made completely out of chaotic energy, all go inside the computer, it is revealed that everyone's worst fears have been realized. Vesteria is working for Apep. Suddenly, Khalifaziz and his friends are thrown into a war that they never expected to happen. Now everything has changed. Now they can't afford to lose. Because this time, Apep has a powerful new ally. A combination of science fiction, Egyptology, physics, and magic, The Black Phoenix joins the ranks of global young adult' and children's literature.

Download or read book Horror Comics in Black and White written by Richard J. Arndt and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1954, the comic book industry instituted the Comics Code, a set of self-regulatory guidelines imposed to placate public concern over gory and horrific comic book content, effectively banning genuine horror comics. Because the Code applied only to color comics, many artists and writers turned to black and white to circumvent the Code’s narrow confines. With the 1964 Creepy #1 from Warren Publishing, black-and-white horror comics experienced a revival continuing into the early 21st century, an important step in the maturation of the horror genre within the comics field as a whole. This generously illustrated work offers a comprehensive history and retrospective of the black-and-white horror comics that flourished on the newsstands from 1964 to 2004. With a catalog of original magazines, complete credits and insightful analysis, it highlights an important but overlooked period in the history of comics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A follow-up publication to the Handbook of Medieval Studies, this new reference work turns to a different focus: medieval culture. Medieval research has grown tremendously in depth and breadth over the last decades. Particularly our understanding of medieval culture, of the basic living conditions, and the specific value system prevalent at that time has considerably expanded, to a point where we are in danger of no longer seeing the proverbial forest for the trees. The present, innovative handbook offers compact articles on essential topics, ideals, specific knowledge, and concepts defining the medieval world as comprehensively as possible. The topics covered in this new handbook pertain to issues such as love and marriage, belief in God, hell, and the devil, education, lordship and servitude, Christianity versus Judaism and Islam, health, medicine, the rural world, the rise of the urban class, travel, roads and bridges, entertainment, games, and sport activities, numbers, measuring, the education system, the papacy, saints, the senses, death, and money.

Book excerpt: The World has grown dark and desolate, and Mason is alone. He travels on an old road, heading into the horizon, without a destination. His only goal is survival. But survival in the desolate wasteland around him isn't easy. He must fight hunger. Fight thirst. Loneliness. And he must fight his way onward against vicious beasts that attack in the night. Will he ever reach an end? And will that end be better or worse than his present circumstances? Maybe the rumors were wrong… maybe there’s only darkness ahead… "The corroded road swept below me, and the darkness dredged on. They said it would be better here. They said that the road would end, and that it would end in a place better than where it started. I was eight years old then. I had a family then. Now, I have grown. The years have waged on, each one darker than the last. Both sky and hope--darker than they once were." This work is a short story and is just over eight thousand words.

Download or read book African American Community Practice Models written by Iris Carlton-LaNey and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American Community Practice Models shows you what you can "see" and "learn" when people of African American descent are put in the center of community analysis and change. This text celebrates African American experiences and challenges you to understand the black experience from the inside out rather than from the outside in. The contributors provide excellent historical and current case studies of leaders and programs that provide you with models for program and community development in African American communities today. For the contemporary social worker, these historical comparisons reveal what strategies have been needed in African American communities in the past because of political and social climates. The studies of current successful programs instruct those in community-based African American programs, general service networks, and students on how to continue to better serve the black community. The contributing authors use a new lens for understanding social welfare history and social service development. They encourage social workers to explore new model-building and to pursue new knowledge about African Americans in the social work classroom. In addition to tracing the history of community development, African American Community Practice Models specifically: presents the black community from a position of strength and leadership documents leadership in the black community to ground national advocacy organizations traces women's leadership in community development documents the unrecognized history of African Americans in the development of the Settlement Movement highlights examples of current self-help programs sponsored by African American communities to change negative behavior patterns documents the impact of racism on service delivery and the response to develop community support programs presents a challenge to expand community development for both internal and external advocacyProfessors of the core courses in social work--HBSE, research, policy, and practice--and of specialized courses in community practice, macropractice, and African Americans would benefit from teaching from African American Community Practice Models. Students and faculty in these and other study areas concerned with this community will get community tactics and program development ideas from this book that connect with African American people. The importance of community development from within the African American community, historical and current methods of dealing with the ongoing impact of racism and economic disadvantage, the responsibility of professionals and community leaders to build empowerment strategies within African American communities, and the need to advocate for rights and opportunities in larger society for black Americans are key issues addressed throughout the book, which begins to fill the void of positive presentations of black community development.
