Book excerpt: Our Heavenly Father supernaturally breathed life into the nostrils of man, creating a living being that houses a soul. I'll take you on my 21-day journey of consciously breathing on purpose. Breathing isn't always a conscious act unless we are struggling to get air through. It's only taken seriously during times of difficulty in a situation that may become an emergency. You are probably breathing unconsciously as you read these words. You will see how the Holy Spirit spoke to me in the midst of spiritual warfare during this fast. You will effectively begin to recognize the Holy Spirit's voice over the enemy's. The breath of life was given to us as a gift. This is the book for learning what purposeful breathing really is.

Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1879. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II. BREATHING. The better a speaker can breathe, the better he can-speak. To manage the breath properly is a principle which underlies the whole art of vocal emission. Its importance is such that some have regarded it as the great secret of elocution. It is quite true that much more depends upon it than is generally supposed. It will, I have no doubt, be a new thing for many to be told that the first thing to learn in the art of speaking or reading is that of breathing. To breathe is to live. Yes, truly, and there is the point to be noted; because that which suffices for the purposes of life merely, may not suffice for something more. To breathe to live is one thing, and to breathe for the purposes of vocal emission is another. We cannot speak or read well unless we can breathe well. We cannot breathe well unless we have learnt. These assertions may sound a little strange, not to say ridiculous; yet, as we shall see as we proceed, they are anything but either the one or the other. Indeed, the assertions cannot be made with too much force or their importance be easily exaggerated. Breathing for the purpose of vocal emission is an art--a talent if you will--anything, so long as it is regarded as an invaluable accomplishment. It is a thing to be acquired, but only as the result of seeking it with some perseverance and energy. If we look at things as they present themselves to us, we shall discover that, in our ordinary breathing, we take in and give out the air in a constant and regular way. There is, so to speak, a stream of air running in and running out of our lungs. This stream varies but little. It is constant, equal, and regular. This suffices for the purposes of life. When we speak we make a peculiar use of the air. It is true that we do it af...

Also covered are: - how pranayama creates health and its use in therapeutic application - mental and spiritual benefits of pranayama - the function of prana and the effects of pranayama - effect of pranayama on brain hemisphericity and balance of the nervous system - purpose of breath retentions and their precise technical application - in depth guidelines for the practice of pranayama - illustrations of the major pranayama and kriya techniques - the use of mantra and digital counting during pranayama - the appropriate diet and postures for pranayama - the importance and use of bandhas and kriyas before and during pranayama - how to set free your breathing pattern through exercising breath waves - descriptions of the classical pranayamas such as Nadi Shodhana, Bhastrika, Surya Bhedana with never before seen detail - how pranayama relates to raising Kundalini - a workable order in which techniques are to be learned and put into sequence with other yogic limbs - pranayama as it relates to the stages of life Gregor Maehle is practising and researching all aspects of yoga since 1982. He lived for several years in India studying with a variety of yogic masters and sadhus. Download or read book Counselling Skills for Social Workers written by Hilda Loughran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counselling skills are very powerful. Really listening and providing compassionate empathy without judging is a core part of social work practice with service users. This book provides a theoretically informed understanding of the core skills required to provide counselling interventions that work. It provides detailed discussion of three core skills which are identified as: talking and responding, listening and observing and thinking. Over 11 chapters these core skills are described in terms of what they mean, how they can be learned and developed, how they can be used and misused and, most importantly, how specific skills can be employed in a coherent and evidence-informed counselling approach. Loughran also looks in detail at the skills required to deliver interventions consistent with three approaches: Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Work and Group work. Illustrative case examples and exercises offer further opportunities for reflection and exploration of self-awareness as well as for practising and enhancing skills development, thus making the book required reading for all social work students, professionals looking to develop their counselling skills and those working in the helping professions more generally. Terms such as social worker, therapist and counsellor will be included as they inform counselling skills in social work.
