Download or read book A Wilderness of Error written by Errol Morris and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academy Award-winning filmmaker and former private detective Errol Morris examines the nature of evidence and proof in the infamous Jeffrey MacDonald murder case Early on the morning of February 17, 1970, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Jeffrey MacDonald, a Green Beret doctor, called the police for help. When the officers arrived at his home they found the bloody and battered bodies of MacDonald’s pregnant wife and two young daughters. The word “pig” was written in blood on the headboard in the master bedroom. As MacDonald was being loaded into the ambulance, he accused a band of drug-crazed hippies of the crime. So began one of the most notorious and mysterious murder cases of the twentieth century. Jeffrey MacDonald was finally convicted in 1979 and remains in prison today. Since then a number of bestselling books—including Joe McGinniss’s Fatal Vision and Janet Malcolm’s The Journalist and the Murderer—and a blockbuster television miniseries have told their versions of the MacDonald case and what it all means. Errol Morris has been investigating the MacDonald case for over twenty years. A Wilderness of Error is the culmination of his efforts. It is a shocking book, because it shows us that almost everything we have been told about the case is deeply unreliable, and crucial elements of the case against MacDonald simply are not true. It is a masterful reinvention of the true-crime thriller, a book that pierces the haze of myth surrounding these murders with the sort of brilliant light that can only be produced by years of dogged and careful investigation and hard, lucid thinking. By this book’s end, we know several things: that there are two very different narratives we can create about what happened at 544 Castle Drive, and that the one that led to the conviction and imprisonment for life of this man for butchering his wife and two young daughters is almost certainly wrong. Along the way Morris poses bracing questions about the nature of proof, criminal justice, and the media, showing us how MacDonald has been condemned, not only to prison, but to the stories that have been created around him. In this profoundly original meditation on truth and justice, Errol Morris reopens one of America’s most famous cases and forces us to confront the unimaginable. Morris has spent his career unsettling our complacent assumptions that we know what we’re looking at, that the stories we tell ourselves are true. This book is his finest and most important achievement to date.

Book excerpt: Lionel barely remembers the old days, before he and his sister, Beatrice, came to the boarding school on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. His life is peaceful, as long as he follows the rules. So he can't understand why Beatrice won't: why she refuses to cut her hair and insists on honoring the Blackfeet traditions. When the appearance of a frozen corpse triggers an irreversible chain of events, the siblings find themselves on a stolen horse fleeing for their lives. Somewhere in the mountains lies their grandfather's homestead -- if only they can survive long enough to find him . . . Suspenseful and beautifully-written, this novel takes readers on an unforgettable journey through the wilderness of Montana in the early 1900s.

Book excerpt: Willakaville is full of zany, crazy, and wacky science fiction adventures that occur in an otherwise small town. In each story, young children find themselves in bizarre predicaments with supernatural situations. There are fourteen stories in all that range from monsters to magic to time travel. The book also includes two unique poems that are fun and delightful. An eclectic range of themes abound in the book. Among those are: a detective mystery, a historical adventure, a suspicious janitor, a strange virus, space travel, a magical pencil, an ominous visitor, a battle with a monster, time travel, mass hysteria, an unexpected hero and some peculiar mayonnaise. For most of the tales, young children are at the center and must work together to find interesting solutions to the eminent problems they face. The characters are easy to identify with as they resemble personalities you would find in any mixture of citizens. Each has his or her own individual style, personality and flaws. Willakaville brings a human touch encompassing a broad range of emotional conflict and self-awareness. Willakaville is almost one hundred fifty pages in length and the chapters range from five to twenty five pages. Some of the tales tackle issues of the future, such as artificial intelligence, or epidemics. Willakaville will stir one’s thoughts and curiosity as it meanders through social and personal issues Willakaville is a fun ride that evokes the imagination and tickles the funny bone. If you are someone that is into action, adventure, comedy and creativity, this is the book for you or someone you love.

Book excerpt: The enemy of my enemy is my friend. So the saying goes at least. The Gray Fiends have been unleashed, threatening to pull back the supernatural veil. If we want to preserve our way of life, the Kyrie and the Academy must declare a truce and join forces to unlock the Forbidden Shelves, secret tomes as arcane as the Fiends themselves. Therein lies our only hope to defeat them. Hoster, Darius and Rock, stay by my side through the turbulent struggle. While my passion rises for one, it dwindles towards the others. To settle a fateful decision, I must open my heart and body one last time. I know the Dalshak blood running through my veins pre-dates the Academy, but does it carry enough power to settle scores born in the Age of Legends? Pacts & Promises is the Fourth Book in The Broken Academy Series, a why choose, slow burn paranormal romance. Each book covers one year at the academy, with different perspectives and recurring characters. All of the books can be read as standalone stories however series order is recommended to fully maximize enjoyment. Author note: The romance is described as "why choose" instead of reverse harem as each central female character has her cake and gets to eat it too, with multiple concurrent love interests that ebb and fall throughout the series, however there are no steamy scenes with multi-partner action. Here's what readers are saying about Pacts & Promises: “This book was a hell of a ride that's for sure!!
