Then Wallace Daltry stepped forward to save her life. A secret had brought the elderly rancher to Red River Station, Texas, to find Angel--and offer her something the outcast daughter of an "upstairs girl" in a saloon never had. A home. Jack Daltry came back to his father's ranch to mend fences between them. Instead, he finds his father dead, and a feisty, beautiful woman claiming his dad gave her the circle D ranch. Now a standoff begins between a man eaten up with anger and a defiant beauty with emotions locked behind a wall of self-control. But when a ruthless killer comes after them both, Jack finds a woman of passion and courage beside him...and a chance for redemption if he can show Angel the transforming power of love, in Cheryl Anne Porter's Captive Angel.

Book excerpt: Warrior-angel Pax is willing to risk everything to save his beautiful mate Astrid from a salacious demon's clutches—even if it means descending into Hades. The ongoing war between Haven and Hades has separated angelic couple Astrid and Pax, who are both soldiers in Haven's army. Pax believes that Astrid is dead and dreams of revenging her killing, but the havenly powers won't even let him return to combat. Widespread disturbing nightmares and a mounting casualty list, restricted mainly to female angels, make him desperate to find out whether the tides of war are shifting—but the truth of what is happening to the female angels at the hands of the demonic is even more shocking. Astrid is being held in brutal captivity by demon warrior Cathal, who is so powerful that his unending sexual appetite could kill a human female, and she is close to succumbing to his dark desires. Can her true love, Pax, save her? Can she save herself?

Book excerpt: Captured in a time not her own. For modern day Gabrielle Ross, a college student and fencing enthusiast, the unexpected happens—a mysterious fog transports her back to the year 1760. Suddenly she finds herself aboard a sailing vessel where sea battles and sword fights make it far easier to die than to live. Branded a stowaway and a spy, she is forced to pick up a sword to defend herself. While being interrogated by a take-no-prisoners English sea captain, Gabrielle must fight for her independence in a time when women have none. While doing his part for "king and country" aboard the HMS Seawraith, Captain Sinclair has earned a reputation for courage and daring. Women find him irresistibly heroic, and yet, no woman has ever touched Damion’s heart—until a twist in fate has a fiercely independent 21st-century woman landing on board his ship. Though unsure if Gabrielle is friend or foe, Damion is drawn to the spirited beauty in ways he cannot deny. As he becomes increasingly intrigued by her unusual mannerisms, the defiant tilt to her chin and thunderous flash to her gray eyes, he begins to unravel her secrets. Damion embarks on a skilled seduction that not only places Gabrielle in his bed—but in his heart as well.

Book excerpt: Many of the details of the main character’s life parallel’s actual life events of the author. The author earned an MBA in finance, served four years in the military, and 14 years with the Department of Homeland Security. The motivation for the book arose when a Jewish friend asked him to describe his feelings about the afterlife. After that, he wrote the book with inspiration for the story being the Two Great Commandments from the Bible as well as thoughts from The Inescapable Love of God by Thomas Talbott and finally a lifetime of experiences. The author was highly inspired by a quote from the movie Gladiator, “what we do in life echoes in eternity.” The book was intended to be more action/romance than spiritual but as he experienced a spiritual awakening of his own, the author’s point of view of the world changed. People would ask, “how are you doing?’ and he would answer, “better than I deserve.” The author was dazzled at the extent of religious fervor in many communities but was all too keenly aware of the sadness and desperation brought about by generational poverty on the part of many and generational greed on the part of others. He was also deeply saddened at the spread of godlessness in the secular world. The author earnestly wants to produce an allegory showing a broken special ops soldier, representing every broken man or woman within the reach of this book, nevertheless making his way to heaven to experience the love of God. How can such a man, or any of us, achieve eternity in heaven with the Holy Father when faced with all that we have done? Joe, the special ops man, was told by the archangels that ever since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden there had been a vicious struggle in the Universe between God and the Devil for the souls of the living. The angels in heaven are tasked to assist the Heavenly Father in this struggle. Joe and other warriors were masters of the skills needed to help the Heavenly Father in this effort.

Book excerpt: Half-devil and miles from anything resembling heroic, perpetual underdog Frank "Triggaltheron" Trigg is the last man standing against Armageddon. As the favorite nephew of the Devil, Frank has led a troubled life, but he'd always had his uncle's influence to fall back on. Now, with God and Lucifer coming to terms and leaving existence to fend for itself, his once exalted status of Anti-Christ-to-be does little to endear him to the hordes of angels and demons running amok in the Godless world. With help from the members of DRAC, an organization of wizards, psychics, telepaths, and low-end supernatural beings, Frank must thwart the pro-Armegeddon forces and rescue an angel in whose life rests the fate of humanity. Better luck next time, humanity.

Download or read book Tales Out of School written by Jo Keroes and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jo Keroes's scope is wide: she examines the teacher as represented in fiction and film in works ranging from the twelfth-century letters of Abelard and Heloise to contemporary films such as Dangerous Minds and Educating Rita. And from the twelfth through the twentieth century, Keroes shows, the teaching encounter is essentially erotic. Tracing the roots of eros from cultural as well as psychological perspectives, Keroes defines erotic in terms broader than the merely sexual. She analyzes ways in which teachers serve as convenient figures on whom to map conflicts about gender, power, and desire. To show how portrayals of men and women differ, she examines pairs of texts, using a film or a novel with a woman protagonist (Up the Down Staircase, for example) as counterpoint to one featuring a male teacher (Blackboard Jungle) or The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie balanced against Dead Poets Society. The portrayals of teachers, like all images a culture presents of itself, reveal much about our private and social selves. Keroes points out authentic accounts of authoritative women teachers who are admired and respected by colleagues and students alike. Real teachers differ from the stereotypes we see in fiction and film, however. Male teachers are often portrayed as heroes in film and fallibly human in fiction, whereas women in either genre are likely to be monstrous or muddled and are virtually never women of color. Among other things, Keroes demonstrates, the tension between reality and representation reveals society's ambivalence about power in the hands of women.
