Download or read book The Maid of Orleans written by Sven Stolpe and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This acclaimed work on the life and mysticism of Joan of Arc is considered by historians as one of the most convincing, well researched and best written accounts of the Maid of Orleans. Stolpe vividly creates the contemporary situation in France during Joan's time, evaluates the latest research on her life, and arrives at an original and authentic portrait - one that is also a work of literature. Stolpe sees Joan of Arc as primarily a mystic, and her supreme achievement and lasting significance not so much in a mission to deliver France - though important - but in her sharing in the Passion of Christ. By shifting the emphasis from the national to the universal, Stolpe brings the saint closer to the modern reader. His scholarship is informed by a profound understanding and sympathy for the Maid, giving his essentially sober work the absorbing interest of a novel. As one critic stated, "Stolpe succeeds in producing a very tense interest, so that it is impossible to lay it aside until the last word is reached." This work should do much to present a new evaluation and appreciation of the life and mysticism of St. Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans.

Download or read book The History of Joan of Arc written by John Martin Atkins and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-11-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Jehanne Darc , peasant maid from the village of Domremy, France, was born into an era of constant internal conflict and war with the English. At the age of 13 she was visited by visions from God which directed her to lead an army in defense of her beloved country. For this, she ultimately suffered a fiery death and a position as the most revered martyr in history. This is the story of Saint Joan, told in a unique format, by one of her greatest admirers, John Martin Atkins. A 48 year old scholar from southern Indiana, John was too old to carry a gun but too patriotic to sit at home and read about the Great War in 1917. As he sought a way to do his part, he discovered that the YMCA was launching a pioneer program to provide lectures for the Doughboys. John leapt at the opportunity and was soon in France. Joan of Arc was his favorite subject; a most appropriate selection, here in the country of her birth, her triumphs and the ultimate tragedy. Not only did he thrill the troops with his vivid and passionate tale of her life, he simultaneously studied at the very places of her exploits to keep his lectures fresh and exciting. Domremy, Tours, Orleans, Rheims and Rouen was the hallowed ground for his research and inspiration between lectures. The war ended but he remained in France to study her life and set foot on every foot of ground that she trod. After much soul searching he determined that the form of his essay should be that of Epic Poetry. And thus began a 35 year labor of love. When questioned regarding his motive for writing this historically factual Epic Poem, he replied: "I sought to pluck so precious a literary jewel from the dusty pages of history and place it, if I could, into the fine art of poetry." At the end of this long period of gestation, John could not find a publisher. He then asked his grandson, Richard for help. A promise was made and after another long period, a team of first cousins finally brought this beautiful work to light. We are proud to present the results of a true labor of love!

Download or read book Jokes and the Linguistic Mind written by Debra Aarons and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the lens of cognitive science, Jokes and the Linguistic Mind investigates jokes that play on some aspect of the structure and function of language. In so doing, Debra Aarons shows that these 'linguistic jokes' can evoke our tacit knowledge of the language we use. Analyzing hilarious examples from movies, plays and books, Jokes and the Linguistic Mind demonstrates that tacit linguistic knowledge must become conscious for linguistic jokes to be understood. The book examines jokes that exploit pragmatic, semantic, morphological, phonological and semantic features of language, as well as jokes that use more than one language and jokes that are about language itself. Additionally, the text explores the relationship between cryptic crossword clues and linguistic jokes in order to demonstrate the difference between tacit knowledge of language and rules of language use that are articulated for a particular purpose. With its use of jokes as data and its highly accessible explanations of complex linguistic concepts, this book is an engaging supplementary text for introductory courses in linguistics, psycholinguistics and cognitive science. It will also be of interest to scholars in translation studies, applied linguistics and philosophy of language.
