Download or read book Black Freemasonry written by Cécile Révauger and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of black Freemasonry from Boston and Philadelphia in the late 1700s through the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement • Examines the letters of Prince Hall, legendary founder of the first black lodge • Reveals how many of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century were also Masons, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Nat King Cole • Explores the origins of the Civil Rights Movement within black Freemasonry and the roles played by Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois When the first Masonic lodges opened in Paris in the early 18th century their membership included traders, merchants, musketeers, clergymen, and women--both white and black. This was not the case in the United States where black Freemasons were not eligible for membership in existing lodges. For this reason the first official charter for an exclusively black lodge--the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Massachusetts--was granted by the Grand Lodge of England rather than any American chapter. Through privileged access to archives kept by Grand Lodges, Masonic libraries, and museums in both the United States and Europe, respected Freemasonry historian Cécile Révauger traces the history of black Freemasonry from Boston and Philadelphia in the late 1700s through the Abolition Movement and the Civil War to the genesis of the Civil Rights Movement in the early 1900s up through the 1960s. She opens with a look at Prince Hall, legendary founder and the chosen namesake when black American lodges changed from “African Lodges” to “Prince Hall Lodges” in the early 1800s. She reveals how the Masonic principles of mutual aid and charity were more heavily emphasized in the black lodges and especially during the reconstruction period following the Civil War. She explores the origins of the Civil Rights Movement within black Freemasonry and the roles played by Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois, founder of the NAACP, among others. Looking at the deep connections between jazz and Freemasonry, the author reveals how many of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century were also Masons, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Eubie Blake, Cab Calloway, and Paul Robeson. Unveiling the deeply social role at the heart of black Freemasonry, Révauger shows how the black lodges were instrumental in helping American blacks transcend the horrors of slavery and prejudice, achieve higher social status, and create their own solid spiritually based social structure, which in some cities arose prior to the establishment of black churches.

Download or read book The Sacred Scriptures Vol II Part 1 2 written by Johannes Biermanski and published by Ebozon Verlag. This book was released on 2016-12-16 with total page 943 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of “The Sacred Scriptures” by John Biermanski is to revoke all falsifications in today's Bibles known so far (in the Old and New Testament), and to restore the original state of the verses as far as possible. In the present work, you will find “The Acts of the Apostles” to “The Letter of Paul the Apostle to Philemon”, in which the verses are written in German and English, as well as an appendix with various elaborations and statements, etc. (see the table of contents). There is both a German and an English edition in which the attachments are available in the respective selected language. This is an English edition. The author was born in 1963 in North Rhine-Westphalia and completed a traineeship for wholesale and foreign trade in a pharmaceutical wholesale company. In the course of his professional development, he used to be a freelancer but was also officially employed; he has experienced a lot rises and falls throughout his life. While studying the Scriptures, he was led by the Spirit of the only God, the Almighty and the only Holy Father in heaven, whereas, by grace, he could recognize many things that are now presented as heresies to the world. In recent years he has been active in the proclamation of the Word of YAHWEH Elohim (G-d) in Europe, Canada, particularly in Brazil (South America), and has enlightened many people by his message, so that they get to know the true God, His holy name and His will and only obey Him (Exodus 20:2-11; Leviticus chapter 19 and 23 etc.) – and start to think about all this, i. e. “so that they finally decide themselves in favour of the living Elohim (G-d): YAHWEH, instead of against Him, and their names are not erased from the divine 'Book of Life' forever.”

Download or read book The Transatlantic Republican written by Bernard Vincent and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by Bernard Vincent covers most aspects of Thomas Paine’s life, thought, and works. It highlights Paine’s contribution to the American and French Revolutions, as well as the active role he played in the intellectual debates of the Age of Enlightenment, in particular through his heated arguments with Edmund Burke or the Abbé Raynal. More than two centuries later, those debates—on the ‘universal’ nature of human rights or the ‘exceptionalism’ of the American experience—seem today to be more relevant than ever. Not only have Common Sense, Rights of Man and The Age of Reason become classics of Anglo-American literature, but, from the moment they appeared, they ushered in a new type of writer, a new way of writing—and a new class of readers. How Paine stormed the “Bastille of Words,” and in so doing served both the “republic” of letters and the cause of democracy, is the real subject of this book.

Download or read book The Nuwaubian Nation written by Susan Palmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nuwaubian Nation takes the reader on a journey into an African-American spiritual movement. The United Nuwaubian Nation has changed shape since its inceptions in the 1970s, transforming from a Black Hebrew mystery school into a Muslim utopian community in Brooklyn, N.Y.; from an Egyptian theme park into an Amerindian reserve in rural Georgia. This book follows the extraordinary career of Dwight York, who in his teens started out in a New York street gang, but converted to Islam in prison. Emerging as a Black messiah, York proceeded to break the Paleman’s spell of Kingu and to guide his people through a series of racial/religious identities that demanded dramatic changes in costume, gender roles and lifestyle. Dr. York’s Blackosophy is analyzed as a new expression of that ancient mystical worldview, Gnosticism. Referring to theories in the sociology of deviance and media studies, the author tracks the escalating hostilities against the group that climaxed in a Waco-style FBI raid on the Nuwaubian compound in 2002. In the ensuing legal process we witness Dr. York’s dramatic reversals of fortune; he is now serving a 135-year sentence as his Black Panther lawyer prepares to take his case to the Supreme Court. This book presents fresh and important insights into racialist spirituality and the social control of unconventional religions in America.
