This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ricardo Iznaola's long-awaited Summa Kitharologica (vol. 1) is the culmination of three decades of deep exploration of the guitarist's playing mechanism and is the most comprehensive presentation of his thinking about these matters to date. Structured in three chapters, Chapter 1 surveys basic anatomy and physiology of the upper limb, with additional sections discussing general pedagogical considerations. Chapter 2, devoted to the right hand, presents detailed information regarding digital joint behavior in general and as applied in actualactivity on the guitar, as well as introducing an analytical system to study anddescribe positional attitudes, or `frames', adopted by the hand in the course ofplaying. Chapter 3 discusses at length left-hand physiomechanics, taking the concepts of shifting and mobility as fundamental categories encompassing all aspects of left-hand technique. Twenty-six anatomical figures, over fifty photosand more than sixty musical examples, with access to online video amply illustrate the text. In the spirit of ground-breaking scientific pioneers, celebrated performer and pedagogue Ricardo Iznaola offers the guitar world the first volume of SummaKitharologica, a comprehensive and highly insightful examination of guitar technique in a remarkable mixture of soaring erudition and down-to-earth practical and applicable approaches to the instrument. Like a modern-day Charles Darwin of the guitar, his insatiable passion for discovery, keen eye of the `naturalist' and relentless analytical mind have carefully and methodically recorded previously little-known or little-recognized observations, relationships and nuances about the natural principles at work in artful guitar playing. For guitar instructors, serious students and even advanced performers who desire to go beyond the `what' ofguitar technique and delve into its `whys' and `hows', this may well be thedefinitive text. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stimulating and thought-provoking, this important new text looks at the welfare problems and philosophical and ethical issues that are caused by changes made to an animal's telos, behaviour and physiology, both positive and negative, to make them more productive or adapted for human uses. These changes may involve selective breeding for production, appearance traits, or competitive advantage in sport, transgenic animals or the use of pharmaceuticals or hormones to enhance production or performance. Changes may impose duties to care for these animals further and more intensely, or they may make the animal more robust. The book considers a wide range of animals, including farm animals, companion animals and laboratory animals. It reviews the ethics and welfare issues of animals that have been adapted for sport, as companions, in work, as ornaments, food sources, guarding and a whole host of other human functions. This important new book sparks debate and is essential reading for all those involved in animal welfare and ethics, including veterinarians, animal scientists, animal welfare scientists and ethologists.

Book excerpt: A.E. Williams presents his thoughts on a variety of subjects of interest to thinking persons. Bringing together a lifetime of experience as a science fiction author, former aerospace materials engineer, cyber-security expert and irascible genius, Williams provides big picture views on our place in the Universe. Based on a series of blog articles written for the "Speculative Fiction Showcase" and including material reviewed while performing research for his series "Terminal Reset", Williams explores and questions some of the most basic precepts of science and physics. The recent popularization of physics in television and movies has opened up this field to the ordinary lay person. In these articles, Mr. Williams looks at why we, as a species, crave to leave the Mother planet, and venture out into the hostile territories of uncharted space. Williams explains, with his own unique and perceptive worldview, just how the Space Race, once the core being of America's science programs, has defined the processes and bureaucracy of space exploration today. Williams provides a narrative of his own experiences, working on high-tech and cutting edge programs that led to the technological marvels we take for granted today. From jet engines to smart phones, from "Star Trek" to "Interstellar", Williams helps readers to understand just how much the world has been impacted science and technology. Is a Mission to Mars or other form of manned space flight our future? Can we afford to spend our resources on these efforts, at the expense of other critical problems facing us today? Follow Williams down the Rabbit Hole, as he looks at Fake News, the Presidential Election, AGW and other contentious events in our world, and body-slams them using logic and the Scientific Method! A.E. Williams makes a compelling argument that manned space exploration is not just viable, but necessary to the survival of the species.

Book excerpt: This practical manual been written for the car-owner who is already a competent driver under normal road conditions but who would like to be a better-than-average driver, and especially for the man who wishes to try his hand at competition work—both racing and rallying. Paul Frère—Grand Prix driver and engineer, Le Mans winner and author—gives invaluable instruction based on his many years of experience on the racing circuits of Europe and America. He deals briefly with theoretical matters and then proceeds with his driving lessons: making the most of practice; learning a circuit; racing starts; cut-off and braking points; slides and drifts; taking advantage of road camber; passing and being passed; slipstreaming; driving under wet and icy conditions and racing at night. He also gives practical advice on race tactics, flag marshals, time keeping, pit signals, race wear, seat belts, the choice of gear ratios and tyres and the different problems posed by road and track racing. With the aid of 60 photographs and diagrams M. Frère explains the correct line to take on various types of corners and why, the effects of peculiarities of surface, and analyses the forces acting on a car in cornering. The book is “required reading” for every ambitious driver in Club and Formula Junior racing and for Rallymen.

This book was released on 1951 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief study has been made to evaluate the importance of the type of air-compression process on the loads produced on an oleo-pneumatic landing gear during impact and to determine the type of air compression process actually obtained during drop tests. A simplified analysis to determine the effect which different air-compression processes might have indicates that the value of the air-compression exponent should have relatively little effect on the landing-gear loads throughout most of the impact. The analysis of experimental data obtained in these tests shows that the polytropic exponent ranged from 1.01 to 1.10 for the condtions tested. The general trend of the data appears relatively independent of vertical contact velocity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pushing Limits: From West Point to Berkeley and Beyond challenges the myth that mathematicians lead dull and ascetic lives. It recounts the unique odyssey of a noted mathematician who overcame military hurdles at West Point, Army Ranger School and the Vietnam War, and survived many civilian escapades—hitchhiking in third-world hotspots, fending off sharks in Bahamian reefs, and camping deep behind the forbidding Iron Curtain. From ultra-conservative West Point in the ’60s to ultra-radical Berkeley in the ’70s, and ultimately to genteel Georgia Tech in the ’80s, this is the tale of an academic career as noteworthy for its offbeat adventures as for its teaching and research accomplishments. It brings to life the struggles and risks underlying mathematical research, the unparalleled thrill of making scientific breakthroughs, and the joy of sharing those discoveries around the world. Hill's book is packed with energy, humor, and suspense, both physical and intellectual. Anyone who is curious about how one maverick mathematician thinks, who wants to relive the zanier side of the ’60s and ’70s, who wants an armchair journey into the third world, or who seeks an unconventional view of several of society's iconic institutions, will be drawn to this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From time immemorial, few narrative genres have had the power to so stir the emotions or captivate the imagination as the true account of a lone adventurer's triumph over the titanic forces of nature. Among the handful of such tales to emerge in the twentieth century, one of the most enduring surely must be Sir Francis Chichester's account of his solitary, nine-month journey around the world in his 53-foot ketch Gipsy Moth IV. The story of how the sixty-five-year-old navigator singlehandedly circumnavigated the globe, the whole way battling hostile seas as well as his boat's numerous design flaws, is a tale of superhuman tenacity and endurance to be read and reread by sailors and armchair adventurers alike. First published in 1967, just months after the completion of Chichester's historic journey, Gipsy Moth Circles the World was an instant international best-seller. It inspired the first solo around-the-world race and remains a timeless testament to the spirit of adventure. Francis Chichester's 1967 singlehanded circumnavigation set a blazing record for speed. He completed the voyage with just one stop and 226 days at sea. It was an amazing performance; that he was sixty-five years old made it the more so. Chichester then sat down to write one of the great narratives of modern voyaging.
