Download or read book Storytime in India written by Helen Priscilla Myers and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American ethnomusicologist and her Indian collaborator recount their experiences researching Bhojpuri wedding songs in India. Stories are the backbone of ethnographic research. During fieldwork, subjects describe their lives through stories. Afterward ethnographers come home from their journeys with stories of their own about their experiences in the field. Storytime in India is an exploration of the stories that come out of ethnographic fieldwork. Helen Priscilla Myers and Umesh Chandra Pandey examine the ways in which their research collecting Bhojpuri wedding songs became interwoven with the stories of their lives, their work together, and their shared experience reading The Eustace Diamonds by Anthony Trollope. Moving through these intertwined stories, the reader learns about the complete Bhojpuri wedding tradition through songs sung by Gangajali and access to the original song recordings and their translations. In the interludes, Pandey reads and interprets The Eustace Diamonds, confronting the reader with the ever-present influence of colonialism, both in India and in ethnographic fieldwork. Interwoven throughout are stories of the everyday, highlighting the ups and downs of the ethnographic experience. Storytime in India combines the style of the Victorian novel with the structure of traditional Indian village tales, in which stories are told within stories. This book questions how we can and should present ethnography as well as what we really learn in the field. As Myers and Pandey ultimately conclude, writers of scholarly books are storytellers themselves and scholarly books are a form of art, just like the traditions they study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to recent research, the best way to make new connections in a child’s brain is by building on something already known. A child who loves a book will listen to it repeatedly, maintaining interest. Using a selected book in a number of consecutive preschool storytimes, but presenting it differently each time, can help children learn new skill sets. This book presents a new approach to storytime, one that employs repetition with variety to create an experience which helps children connect and engage with the story on a higher level. Diamant-Cohen, recently awarded the 2013 ASCLA Leadership and Professional Achievement Award, and Hetrick offer a year’s worth of activities specifically designed to address multiple intelligences through a repetition-based process. Incorporating recent theories on developmental learning, this book includes Scripts for 8 different books, with enough activities to repeat each one for six weeks, along with lists of optional alternative books Planning aids such as outlines of storytime sessions, a fill-in-the-blanks planning sheet, questions for evaluation, and tips for enhanced storytimes using props and crafts Detailed but straightforward explanations of theory and research that will help readers communicate effectively with parents, caregivers, and other stakeholders From setup to execution, here’s everything you need to create and implement a successful, elevated storytime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories are part of childhood. They help us grow, build our imagination, instill a sense of wonder and hope, and help us understand right and wrong. Mothers have told stories to teach children culture and tradition, morals and ritual, and behavioral consequences ever since there were mothers. In the words of Fairy Queen Titania: "Is it not the mothers who bring up the babes, and give the growing child its earliest lesson to know right from wrong?" Fairy tales and folklore provide an entertaining, imaginative way of doing just that. Lessons from Once Upon a Time is the story of Fair One and Merlina her tutor, who reads the growing princess a wonder tale each week for her education - manners, tradition, history, astronomy, and more. A wonderful book for parents to read to their children.

Download or read book Once Upon a Time Traveler written by Joshua Light and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three brilliant scientists harness the power to fold time and visit the past and future like a common tourist. One scientist formulates a tour of Biblical events because he believes in God, but the tour is reluctantly and accidentally traveled by a scientist who does not. What will unbelieving eyes see, and how will they interpret the most significant supernatural events of all time? The tour embraces world history from the beginning of creation and into the future, where Biblical prophecy tells us that dangerous people will control the whole world, countless millions of people will evaporate, and society will plunge into darkness. What if a time traveler visited just two years into the future after the Biblical Prophetic clock has already started ticking? And then catapulted into the past, where Earth is like another planet entirely? What kind of world, and what kind of tribulation would he find? And as an unbeliever, how would he respond to it? Light deals with the issues of Biblical prophecy, recent young-earth creation, a literal and startling twist on how things were, and how things will be. Set aside the notions of being left behind, and embrace the idea of being brought along, in the circuits of Earth’s end-to-end timeline. Enter a future we’d rather forget, and a history that nobody remembers.
