Download or read book Peak written by Chip Conley and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-09-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After fifteen years of rising to the pinnacle of the hospitality industry, Chip Conley's company was suddenly undercapitalized and overexposed in the post-dot.com, post-9/11 economy. For relief and inspiration, Conley, the CEO and founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, turned to psychologist Abraham Maslow's iconic Hierarchy of Needs. This book explores how Conley's company "the second largest boutique hotelier in the world" overcame the storm that hit the travel industry by applying Maslow's theory to what Conley identifies as the key Relationship Truths in business with Employees, Customers and Investors. Part memoir, part theory, and part application, the book tells of Joie de Vivre's remarkable transformation while providing real world examples from other companies and showing how readers can bring about similar changes in their work and personal lives. Conley explains how to understand the motivations of employees, customers, bosses, and investors, and use that understanding to foster better relationships and build an enduring and profitable corporate culture.

Download or read book Peak Inequality written by Dorling, Danny and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequality is the key political issue of our time. Danny Dorling wrote his seminal work Injustice: Why social inequality persists in 2010, and as an early proponent of rapidly reducing economic inequalities, he is now much sought-after as one of the foremost contributors to the debates surrounding it. Here Dorling brings together brand new material alongside a carefully curated selection of his most recent writing on inequality from publications as wide ranging as the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, New Statesman, Financial Times and the China People’s Daily. Covering key inequality issues including politics, housing, education and health, he explores whether we have now reached ‘peak inequality’. He concludes, crucially, by predicting what the future holds for Britain, as attempts are made to defuse the ticking time bomb while we simultaneously try to negotiate Brexit and react to the wider international situation of a world of people demanding to become more equal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2001, Kenneth Deffeyes made a grim prediction: oil production would reach a peak within the next decade - and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it." "In this updated edition of Hubbert's Peak, Deffeves explains the crisis that few now deny we are headed toward. Using geology and economics, he shows how everything from the rising price of groceries to the subprime mortgage crisis has been exacerbated by the shrinking supply - and growing price - of oil. Although there is no easy solution to these problems, Deffeves argues that the first step is understanding the trouble that we are in."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: 'I was born with inflammation of the lungs, and of everything else, I believe, that was capable of inflammation,' returned Mr Bounderby. 'For years, ma'am, I was one of the most miserable little wretches ever seen. ' Charles Dickens, Hard Times, Book 1, ch. 4 Asthma is a common condition. It affects at least 12% of school children and 5 % of adults in the UK. This amounts to around 140 patients in a General Practitioner's average list of 2000, not all of whom can be managed by specialist chest clinics and over half of whom will require prophylactic therapy. There are therefore at least 3 million sufferers in Britain today. Yet, despite the improvement in treatment available in the past decade there has been a rise in numbers of attacks of acute asthma, notably in children, and a consequent rise in hospital admissions. The same pattern is also seen in adults, albeit less marked. Despite a number of possible incriminating causes, the real reasons for the rise are not clear. Whatever the cause may be, the inevitable effect is clear - the workload of doctors and nurses is expanding with only now, in the mid-1990s, the suggestion that this increase has begun to level off. Each year around 2000 people die from asthma in England and Wales and two-thirds of these deaths are preventable. The economic costs of asthma are huge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a state-of-the-science synthesis of the effects of forest harvest activities on peak flows and channel morphology in the Pacific Northwest, with a specific focus on western Oregon and Washington. We develop a database of relevant studies reporting peak flow data across rain-, transient-, and snow-dominated hydrologic zones, and provide a quantitative comparison of changes in peak flow across both a range of flows and forest practices. Increases in peak flows generally diminish with decreasing intensity of percentage of watershed harvested and lengthening recurrence intervals of flow. Watersheds located in the rain-dominated zone appear to be less sensitive to peak flow changes than those in the transient snow zone; insufficient data limit interpretations for the snow zone. Where present, peak flow effects on channel morphology should be confined to stream reaches where channel gradients are less than approximately 0.02 and streambeds are composed of gravel and finer material. We provide guidance as to how managers might evaluate the potential risk of peak flow increases based on factors such as presence of roads, watershed drainage efficiency, and specific management treatments employed. The magnitude of effects of forest harvest on peak flows in the Pacific Northwest, as represented by the data reported here, are relatively minor in comparison to other anthropogenic changes to streams and watersheds.

Download or read book Pikes Peak written by Sherry Monahan and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before being "discovered" by U.S. explorer Zebulon Pike in 1806, the Pikes Peak region was home to a variety of different cultures, including Native Americans, Mexicans, and French and Spanish explorers. Captured here in almost 200 vintage images are the lives, trials, adventures, and leisures of some of the Peak's early pioneers and visitors, covering a span of almost 60 years. Along with rare images of the Pikes Peak area from the late 1800s, this collection contains a number of previously unpublished photographs. These include pictures of female pioneers traversing mountains in Cheyenne canons and other vicinities in the 1920s; Colorado Mountain Club members on their hiking trips in the area; pre-World War I memoirs and poems from local residents; and pictures of local prospectors, like Frank Nelson, who remained long after the large gold deposits were discovered. Also featured is the development of the surrounding communities and attractions of the Peak, including Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, Cripple Creek, Cheyenne Mountain and Canons, Garden of the Gods, Canon City, Royal Gorge, the Broadmoor Hotel, and the Cliff House.
