Book excerpt: This is an all-encompassing and exhaustive exposition of the theory of infinite-dimensional Unitary Representations of Locally Compact Groups and its generalization to representations of Banach algebras. The presentation is detailed, accessible, and self-contained (except for some elementary knowledge in algebra, topology, and abstract measure theory). In the later chapters the reader is brought to the frontiers of present-day knowledge in the area of Mackey normal subgroup analysisand its generalization to the context of Banach *-Algebraic Bundles.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Locally compact groups arise in many diverse areas of mathematics, the physical sciences, and engineering and the presence of the group is usually felt through unitary representations of the group. This observation underlies the importance of understanding such representations and how they may be constructed, combined, or decomposed. Of particular importance are the irreducible unitary representations. In the middle of the last century, G.W. Mackey initiated a program to develop a systematic method for identifying all the irreducible unitary representations of a given locally compact group G. We denote the set of all unitary equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations of G by G. Mackey's methods are only effective when G has certain restrictive structural characteristics; nevertheless, time has shown that many of the groups that arise in important problems are appropriate for Mackey's approach. The program Mackey initiated received contributions from many researchers with some of the mostsubstantial advances made by R.J. Blattner and J.M.G. Fell. Fell'swork is particularly important in studying Gas a topological space. At the core of this program is the inducing construction, which is a method of building a unitary representation of a group from a representation of a subgroup"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of crossed products is extremely rich and intriguing. There are applications not only to operator algebras, but to subjects as varied as noncommutative geometry and mathematical physics. This book provides a detailed introduction to this vast subject suitable for graduate students and others whose research has contact with crossed product $C*$-algebras. In addition to providing the basic definitions and results, the main focus of this book is the fine ideal structure of crossed products as revealed by the study of induced representations via the Green-Mackey-Rieffel machine. In particular, there is an in-depth analysis of the imprimitivity theorems on which Rieffel's theory of induced representations and Morita equivalence of $C*$-algebras are based. There is also a detailed treatment of the generalized Effros-Hahn conjecture and its proof due to Gootman, Rosenberg, and Sauvageot. This book is meant to be self-contained and accessible to any graduate student coming out of a first course on operator algebras. There are appendices that deal with ancillary subjects, which while not central to the subject, are nevertheless crucial for a complete understanding of the material. Some of the appendices will be of independent interest. To view another book by this author, please visit Morita Equivalence and Continuous-Trace $C*$-Algebras.

Download or read book Continuous Bounded Cohomology of Locally Compact Groups written by Nicolas Monod and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research has repeatedly led to connections between important rigidity questions and bounded cohomology. However, the latter has remained by and large intractable. This monograph introduces the functorial study of the continuous bounded cohomology for topological groups, with coefficients in Banach modules. The powerful techniques of this more general theory have successfully solved a number of the original problems in bounded cohomology. As applications, one obtains, in particular, rigidity results for actions on the circle, for representations on complex hyperbolic spaces and on Teichmüller spaces. A special effort has been made to provide detailed proofs or references in quite some generality.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 1616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of a two volume set that provides a modern account of basic Banach algebra theory including all known results on general Banach *-algebras. This account emphasises the role of *-algebra structure and explores the algebraic results which underlie the theory of Banach algebras and *-algebras. This first volume is an independent, self-contained reference on Banach algebra theory. Each topic is treated in the maximum interesting generality within the framework of some class complex algebras rather than topological algebras. In both volumes proofs are presented in complete detail at a level accessible to graduate students. In addition, the books contain a wealth of historical comments, background material, examples, particularly in noncommutative harmonic analysis, and an extensive bibliography. Together these books will become the standard reference for the general theory of *-algebras.

Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the theory of quantum groups with emphasis on their duality and on the setting of operator algebras. The book is addressed to graduate students and non-experts from other fields. Only basic knowledge of (multi-)linear algebra is required for the first part, while the second and third part assume some familiarity with Hilbert spaces, CÝsuperscript *¨-algebras, and von Neumann algebras.

Download or read book Group Representations Ergodic Theory and Mathematical Physics written by Robert S. Doran and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Mackey was an extraordinary mathematician of great power and vision. His profound contributions to representation theory, harmonic analysis, ergodic theory, and mathematical physics left a rich legacy for researchers that continues today. This book is based on lectures presented at an AMS special session held in January 2007 in New Orleans dedicated to his memory. The papers, written especially for this volume by internationally-known mathematicians and mathematical physicists, range from expository and historical surveys to original high-level research articles. The influence of Mackey's fundamental ideas is apparent throughout. The introductory article contains recollections from former students, friends, colleagues, and family as well as a biography describing his distinguished career as a mathematician at Harvard, where he held the Landon D. Clay Professorship of Mathematics. Topics examined here include recent results on induced representations, virtual groups, the Mackey Machine and crossed products, representations of Baumslag-Solitar groups, the Radon transform and the heat equation, groupoids in the study of wavelets, and quantum theory. The in-depth historical surveys of Mackey's work on representation theory, ergodic theory, and physics, together with recent developments inspired by his fundamental work will be of considerable interest to both graduate students and researchers alike.

This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infinite dimensional representation theory blossomed in the latter half of the twentieth century, developing in part with quantum mechanics and becoming one of the mainstays of modern mathematics. Fundamentals of Infinite Dimensional Representation Theory provides an accessible account of the topics in analytic group representation theory and operator algebras from which much of the subject has evolved. It presents new and old results in a coherent and natural manner and studies a number of tools useful in various areas of this diversely applied subject. From Borel spaces and selection theorems to Mackey's theory of induction, measures on homogeneous spaces, and the theory of left Hilbert algebras, the author's self-contained treatment allows readers to choose from a wide variety of topics and pursue them independently according to their needs. Beyond serving as both a general reference and as a text for those requiring a background in group-operator algebra representation theory, for careful readers, this monograph helps reveal not only the subject's utility, but also its inherent beauty.

This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is the first comprehensive treatment of multiplicity-free induced representations of finite groups as a generalization of finite Gelfand pairs. Up to now, researchers have been somehow reluctant to face such a problem in a general situation, and only partial results were obtained in the one-dimensional case. Here, for the first time, new interesting and important results are proved. In particular, after developing a general theory (including the study of the associated Hecke algebras and the harmonic analysis of the corresponding spherical functions), two completely new highly nontrivial and significant examples (in the setting of linear groups over finite fields) are examined in full detail. The readership ranges from graduate students to experienced researchers in Representation Theory and Harmonic Analysis.
