Book excerpt: This book has especially been republished to raise funds for the BBC’s Children in Need appeals. This book is compiled of 26 old, rare and forgotten Fairy Tales and stories taken from books in Abela Publishing’s series “Folk-Lore, Fairytales, Myths and Legends from Around the World” - a series created to raise funds for charities and underprivileged individuals. Keeping true to our vision, the intent behind this compendium is to raise funds for BBC’s Children in Need Appeal. The 26 stories and poems in this volume raising funds for the appeal are Tom Tit Tot - English King O'toole And His Goose - Irish The Origin Of Loch Ness - Scottish The Widow And Her Daughters - Scottish Fair, Brown And Trembling - Irish The Perfidious Vizier - Arabian The Frog's Skin – Rep. of Georgia Turtle-Dove, Sage-Cock And The Witch - American Indian A Story About A Giant And The Cause Of Thunder – West Africa The Parrot's Song - Armenian poem The Emperor Tenchi – Japanese poem The Beggar King - Israeli The Foolish, Timid Rabbit – Jataka Tale Cradle Song – Armenian poem The Charmed Ring - India The Thirteenth Son Of The King Of Erin - Celtic The Minister Michi-Nobu Fujiwara – Japanese poem The Monkey’s Fiddle – Kalahari Bushmen The Daughter Of The Rose - Romania The Gypsy And The Dragon – Bukowina Gypsy How The Sacred Duck Got His Yellow Breast - Tibet The Story Of Gelert - Wales Why The Kingfisher Always Wears A War Bonnet – American Indian How Sun, Moon, And Wind Went Out To Dinner - India Twas The Night Before Christmas – Viking Version The Tail - Celtic The words 'Fairy Tales' must be taken to include tales in which something 'fairy', something extraordinary occurs -- fairies, giants, dwarfs, speaking animals. One cannot imagine a child saying, 'Tell me a folk-tale', or 'Another nursery tale, please, grandma'. It must also be taken to cover tales in which something magical happens. Mostly it is the comical stupidity of some of the actors, as is so common in moral tales. In buying this book you will be giving in more than one way. Once to the Children in Need appeal and again, to yourself, as you read and enjoy stories not read for many a year. But should you perchance happen to read these stories to your children, nieces and nephews or grand-children, you will be giving yet again. 50% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to the appeal. So take some time out and travel back to a period before television, or even radio for that matter, when families would gather around a crackling and spitting hearth and granddad or grandma or an uncle or aunt would delight and captivate their audience with stories passed on to them from their mothers, fathers and grandparents. =============== TAGS: Folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, lore, Children in Need, Appeal, Tom Tit Tot, English, King O'toole, Goose, Ireland, Origin Of Loch Ness, Scotland, Widow, Daughters, Fair, Brown, Trembling, Perfidious Vizier, Arabia, Frog's Skin, Turtle-Dove, Sage-Cock, Witch, Giant, Cause Of Thunder, West Africa, Parrot's Song, Armenia, Emperor Tenchi, Beggar King, Jewish, Foolish, Timid Rabbit, Cradle Song, Charmed Ring, Thirteenth Son, King Of Erin, Celtic, Minister, Fujiwara, Japan, Monkey’s Fiddle, Jataka, Daughter, Rose, Romania, Gypsy, Dragon, Sacred Duck, Yellow Breast, Tibet, Gelert, wales, Kingfisher, War Bonnet, American Indian, Sun, Moon, Wind, Out To Dinner, India, Night Before Christmas, Viking, Tail

Download or read book Broadcasting Politics in Japan written by Ellis S. Krauss and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aftermath of Japan's 1945 military defeat left its public institutions in a state of deep crisis; virtually every major source of state legitimacy was seriously damaged or wholly remade by the postwar occupation. Between 1960 and 1990, however, these institutions renewed their strength, taking on legitimacy that erased virtually all traces of their postwar instability. How did this transformation come about? This is the question Ellis S. Krauss ponders in Broadcasting Politics in Japan; his answer focuses on the role played by the Japanese mass media and in particular by Japan's national broadcaster, NHK. Since the 1960s, television has been a fixture of the Japanese household, and NHK's TV news has until very recently been the dominant, and most trusted, source of political information for the Japanese citizen. NHK's news style is distinctive among the broadcasting systems of industrialized countries; it emphasizes facts over interpretation and gives unusual priority to coverage of the national bureaucracy. Krauss argues that this approach is not simply a reflection of Japanese culture, but a result of the organization and processes of NHK and their relationship with the state. These factors had profound consequences for the state's postwar re-legitimization, while the commercial networks' recent challenge to NHK has helped engender the wave of cynicism currently faced by the state. Krauss guides the reader through the complex interactions among politics, media organizations, and Japanese journalism to demonstrate how NHK television news became a shaper of Japan's political world, rather than simply a lens through which to view it.

PRAISE FOR JOAN AIKEN "Others may try, but nobody comes close to Aiken in writing sequels to Jane Austen." PublishersWeekly "Aiken's story is rich with humor, and her language is compelling. Readers captivated with Elinor and Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility will thoroughly enjoy Aiken's crystal gazing, but so will those unacquainted with Austen." Booklist ..".innovative storyteller Aiken again pays tribute to Jane Austen in a cheerful spinoff of Sense and Sensibility." Kirkus Reviews

Download or read book A Tragedy of Errors written by Ken Bloomfield and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decommissioning of the Provisional IRA in 2005 suggests that Northern Ireland may finally be ready to turn from the deadly paramilitary clashes of the twentieth century to the thorny problems of a normalized political process. As both former head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service and Victim’s Commissioner, Sir Kenneth Bloomfield is in a unique position to evaluate the wisdom and long-term effects of the past fifty years of Northern Irish politics and policy. Bloomfield probes a number of crucial questions about the United Kingdom’s management of Irish affairs. Three decades of fighting have had grave consequences for Northern Ireland—what were the costs? Was violence inevitable? Bloomfield delineates the unwise decisions and abrogated responsibilities that led to the civil crisis of the Troubles while emphasizing the United Kingdom’s overriding duty to ensure peace. Peppered with incisive—and critical—portraits of the major political players, including Tony Blair and John Hume, A Tragedy of Errors gives us an unflinching insider’s view of Northern Irish politics and helps us understand the divisions that still dominate the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the first edition: "It is a wonderful source of information and has the merit of going straight to the subject, being technically precise although very easy to understand. There are numerous pictures, photographs, diagrams, which make the reading a real pleasure." --European Broadcasting Union Technical Review "The complexity of a satellite newsgathering system could be a four-month long college course with a high tuition rate and an enrolment number so large you have to watch your professor on a TV screen. Jonathan Higgins might have saved the independent learner a few attendance point deductions by fitting it into one book." --Satellite Broadband magazine An ideal introduction for anyone working, or interested, in satellite newsgathering (SNG). This book is an important and valuable work that is extremely easy to read, comprehensive in its treatment, and detailed where necessary. SNG used to be an immensely complex and expensive affair where broadcasting organizations were at the mercy of an expert who sat in a lonely corner, until needed. Things have changed--everyone in a global news organization needs to know about it now. This is not only because of the high costs of mistakes, but because now even non-technical journalists on the ground have to operate their own equipment. Learn the skills, basics of the equipment, cutting edge technology and critical safety issues of satellite newsgathering. * An informative guide for engineers and technicians, as well as journalists and editorial management working, or interested, in satellite newsgathering * Practical and theoretical insights into the technology and its application provide a complete overview * Discover how to overcome probelms when operating SNG systems worldwide
