Download or read book Reading as Therapy written by Timothy Aubry and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do Americans read contemporary fiction? This question seems simple, but is it? Do Americans read for the purpose of aesthetic appreciation? To satisfy their own insatiable intellectual curiosities? While other forms of media have come to monopolize consumers’ leisure time, in the past two decades book clubs have proliferated, Amazon has sponsored thriving online discussions, Oprah Winfrey has inspired millions of viewers to read both contemporary works and classics, and novels have retained their devoted following within middlebrow communities. In Reading as Therapy, Timothy Aubry argues that contemporary fiction serves primarily as a therapeutic tool for lonely, dissatisfied middle-class American readers, one that validates their own private dysfunctions while supporting elusive communities of strangers unified by shared feelings. Aubry persuasively makes the case that contemporary literature’s persistent appeal depends upon its capacity to perform a therapeutic function. Aubry traces the growth and proliferation of psychological concepts focused on the subjective interior within mainstream, middle-class society and the impact this has had on contemporary fiction. The prevailing tendency among academic critics has been to decry the personal emphasis of contemporary fiction as complicit with the rise of a narcissistic culture, the ascendency of liberal individualism, and the breakdown of public life. Reading as Therapy, by contrast, underscores the varied ideological effects that therapeutic culture can foster. To uncover the many unpredictable ways in which contemporary literature answers the psychological needs of its readers, Aubry considers several different venues of reader-response—including Oprah’s Book Club and Amazon customer reviews—the promotional strategies of publishing houses, and a variety of contemporary texts, ranging from Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner to Anita Shreve’s The Pilot’s Wife to David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest. He concludes that, in the face of an atomistic social landscape, contemporary fiction gives readers a therapeutic vocabulary that both reinforces the private sphere and creates surprising forms of sympathy and solidarity among strangers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK “One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs, or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls.” A Thousand Splendid Suns is a gripping story of two women learning how to survive under the thumb of an abusive husband in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Mariam grew up as the illegitimate daughter of a Herat businessman raised by a bitter and depressed single mother. Laila was the beloved daughter of a Kabul man who believed in a world where men and women are equal. When the circumstances of war bring them together under the roof of the cruel Rasheed, their only comfort is in the special bond of sisterhood they form during years cut off from the rest of the world. Khaled Hosseini weaves a tale of love and survival that begins during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1970s and ends with the American invasion and occupation in the early 2000s. Although ultimately a story of love and friendship, A Thousand Splendid Suns reveals the devastating affects of war on those caught in the middle – particularly women and children. MEET THE AUTHOR Lacey Kohlmoos is a writer, traveler and lover of the arts. After graduating from the University of Virginia with a BA in Drama & the Studies of Women and Gender, the only thing she knew for sure was that she wanted to travel. So, she embarked on a 10 1⁄2 month round-the-world trip, then traveled to Costa Rica where she spent one year teaching elementary school English in a small mountain town. Throughout her two years of travels, she's always kept a blog. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK At first, Rasheed treats Mariam well, albeit distantly. But, after she has multiple miscarriages he turns abusive. It becomes clear to Mariam that the only reason Rasheed married her was so that she would bear him sons. When she does not give her husband what he wants, Mariam finds herself trapped in a home with a man who believes that husbands should always keep a good handle on their wives. Living just down the street from Mariam and Rasheed is a young Kabul beauty – Laila. Though largely ignored by her mother, she is doted upon by her father Hakim who believes that women should be treated as equals to men. But, the reality of living in Soviet-occupied Afghanistan comes crashing down on Laila when her two older brothers are killed while fighting with the Mujaheedan. She finds comfort in Tariq, a slightly older neighborhood boy who protects Laila from bullies and other harm... Buy a copy to keep reading!

Download or read book Reading Khaled Hosseini written by Rebecca Stuhr and published by ABC-CLIO. This book was released on 2009 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Culture, Changing Society proposes a challenging new account of the relations between culture and society focused on how particular forms of cultural knowledge and expertise work on, order and transform society. Examining these forms of culturee(tm)s action on the social as aspects of a historically distinctive ensemble of cultural institutions, it considers the diverse ways in which culture has been produced and mobilised as a resource for governing populations. These concerns are illustrated in detailed case studies of how anthropological conceptions of the relations between race and culture have shaped e" and been shaped by e" the relationships between museums, fieldwork and governmental programmes in early twentieth-century France and Australia. These are complemented by a closely argued account of the relations between aesthetics and governance that, in contrast to conventional approaches, interprets the historical emergence of the autonomy of the aesthetic as vastly expanding the range of arte(tm)s social uses. In pursuing these concerns, particular attention is given to the role that the cultural disciplines have played in making up and distributing the freedoms through which modern forms of liberal government operate. An examination of the place that has been accorded habit as a route into the regulation of conduct within liberal social, cultural and political thought brings these questions into sharp focus. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology, cultural studies, media studies, anthropology, museum and heritage studies, history, art history and cultural policy studies.
