Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Life and Times of Jesus The Messiah" is a Life of Christ documentation within a first century setting that includes highly detailed commentary across the full spectrum of the Gospels. The original work, comprised of five volumes, was written by Alfred Edersheim and was first published in or about 1883. This vast work builds on a foundation of historical, sociological, philosophical and theological references, and has as one of its primary aims to set the Gospels of the New Testament in chronological order. As each of the Gospels has its unique presentation of the story of Christ, Edersheim's chronological presentation and commentary reveals important threads and story lines that are not immediately obvious with their reading in the usual order. This abridgment follows Edersheim's chronological set out, retains the high points of his commentary and includes the passages of the Gospels immediately below his commentary for easy reference. Also included in this abridgment are rudimentary maps tracing the movements of Christ as well as pictures from Galilee, Nazareth and Jerusalem, some photos being well over 100 years old, preserving images of important New Testament sites in a setting far more like the time of Christ then can be seen in modern developed Israel. Edersheim's original work is reduced by about 90% in this abridgment providing a chronological framework for reading the four Gospels side by side and simultaneously, within the highpoints of his commentary. It is an excellent experience for beginning bible readers, a good introduction to intermediate students wanting to work their way up to a study of the full five volumes, and a quick reference or companion tool for those who are studying the work in its entirety.

Book excerpt: JESUS THE MESSIAH – This is the official abridged edition of Alfred Edersheim's monumental and classic work “The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah.” It reduces the original 6 volumes into one manageable (87 chapter!) work and omits many of the heavy and technical footnotes. If you want the original, with all the Greek notes and appendixes this may not be for you – but if you want a lucid, in-depth and highly informative look at the life and times of Jesus and a deeper understanding of Jewish culture you will not be disappointed! (87 CHAPTERS) Alfred Edersheim (1825 –1889) was a Messianic Jew and gives great insights from historical sources, Jewish tradition and teaching. He was a well-known pastor and scholar, ministering in Scotland and England. He is also famous for his books “The Temple: Its Ministry and Services” and “Sketches of Jewish Social Life.”

Download or read book Matthew written by Michael J. Wilkins and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the Gospel of Matthew in church history cannot be overstated. For Jewish readers, it affirmed the Messiahship of Jesus, referring consistently to the Scriptures to establish his credentials. For Gentile disciples, it provided powerful and dramatic support of their inclusion in God’s kingdom. The cross of Christ had removed the division between Jew and non-Jew, and through Matthew’s writings, we see Israel’s God drawing the entire world to himself through Jesus. “The Gospel according to Matthew . . . Was the most widely read and frequently used of any of the four Gospels in the formative years of the church,” writes Michael Wilkins. In this volume of the NIV Application Commentary, Wilkins explains Matthew’s broad appeal not only to his ancient readers, but also to us today. Exploring the links between the Bible and our own times, Wilkins shares perspectives on Matthew’s Gospel that reveal its enduring relevance for our twenty-first-century lives. Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don’t discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable—but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our present-day context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully today. “This series promises to become an indispensable tool for every pastor and teacher who seeks to make the Bible's timeless message speak to this generation.” Billy Graham “It takes more than interpretation of God's Word to change lives, it takes application. Application is the bottom line in preaching and teaching. Without it, we've missed the point of the Bible. The NIV Application Commentary is an outstanding resource for pastors and anyone else who is serious about developing ‘doers of the Word.’” Rick Warren, Pastor Saddleback Valley Community Church

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A lucid, intelligent page-turner” (Los Angeles Times) that challenges long-held assumptions about Jesus, from the host of Believer Two thousand years ago, an itinerant Jewish preacher walked across the Galilee, gathering followers to establish what he called the “Kingdom of God.” The revolutionary movement he launched was so threatening to the established order that he was executed as a state criminal. Within decades after his death, his followers would call him God. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history’s most enigmatic figures by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived. Balancing the Jesus of the Gospels against the historical sources, Aslan describes a man full of conviction and passion, yet rife with contradiction. He explores the reasons the early Christian church preferred to promulgate an image of Jesus as a peaceful spiritual teacher rather than a politically conscious revolutionary. And he grapples with the riddle of how Jesus understood himself, the mystery that is at the heart of all subsequent claims about his divinity. Zealot yields a fresh perspective on one of the greatest stories ever told even as it affirms the radical and transformative nature of Jesus’ life and mission. Praise for Zealot “Riveting . . . Aslan synthesizes Scripture and scholarship to create an original account.”—The New Yorker “Fascinatingly and convincingly drawn . . . Aslan may come as close as one can to respecting those who revere Jesus as the peace-loving, turn-the-other-cheek, true son of God depicted in modern Christianity, even as he knocks down that image.”—The Seattle Times “[Aslan’s] literary talent is as essential to the effect of Zealot as are his scholarly and journalistic chops. . . . A vivid, persuasive portrait.”—Salon “This tough-minded, deeply political book does full justice to the real Jesus, and honors him in the process.”—San Francisco Chronicle “A special and revealing work, one that believer and skeptic alike will find surprising, engaging, and original.”—Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power “Compulsively readable . . . This superb work is highly recommended.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Download or read book Sharing Your Faith With A Muslim written by Abdiyah Akbar Abdul-Haqq and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 1980-08-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the book for you if you are serious about communicating the truth of the Gospel to Muslims. It is thorough. It is authoritative. It is written by a third-world Christian whose father was a convert from Islam. It is the contention of the author that an effective evangelistic approach to the adherents of Islam must be based upon a study of Christ as He is found in both Scripture and the Koran. Christ, then, becomes the bridge between the two faiths. Such a search is, to Abdul-Haqq, the natural means of introducing the Savior. Having seen Christ on the pages of the Bible, he moves on to a presentation of the great issues of sin, salvation, and the nature of God as the final pressing points to raise in efforts to win Muslim friends and neighbors to Jesus.
