Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Marie-Louise von Franz is a 28 volume Magnum Opus from one of the leading minds in Jungian Psychology. Volume 1, released on her 106th birthday, is to be followed by 27 more volumes over the next 10 years. Volume 2 turns to the Hero’s Journey within fairytales. The Hero’s Journey is about the great adventure that leads to a cherished and difficult to obtain prize. In these fairytales, the Self is often symbolized as that treasured prize and the hero’s travails symbolize the process of individuation. In its many manifestations, the hero embodies the emerging personality. “In the conscious world, the hero is only one part of the personality—the despised part—and through his attachment to the Self in the unconscious is a symbol of the whole personality.” Von Franz’s prodigious knowledge of fairytales from around the world demonstrates that the fairytale draws its root moisture from the collective realm. This volume continues where Volume 1 left off as von Franz describes the fairytale, “suspended between the divine and the secular worlds (…) creating a mysterious and pregnant tension that requires extreme power to withstand.” The resistance of the great mother against the hero and his humble origins, as well as the hero freeing the anima figure from the clutches of the unconscious are universal archetypal patterns. The spoils retrieved by the hero symbolize new levels of consciousness wrested from the unconscious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of selfhood in Renaissance texts constitutes a scholarly and critical debate of almost unmanageable proportions. The author of this work begins by questioning the strategies with which male writers depict powerful women. Although Spenser's Britomart, Shakespeare's Cleopatra, and Milton's Eve figure selfhood very differently and to very different ends, they do have two significant elements in common: mirrors and transformations that diminish the power of the female self.

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Script Development written by Craig Batty and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Handbook of Script Development provides a creative and critical guide for those who study, teach and work on the development of stories for the screen. The larger, international perspective is highly valuable in todays media climate where screenwriters sell stories to streaming services with an eye on collecting viewers from all over the world. Such a cross-cultural product requires exposure to new ideas in how scripts are developed which is exactly the perspective I discovered in these pages." --- Dr Rosanne Welch, Executive Director, Stephens College MFA in TV and Screenwriting The Palgrave Handbook of Script Development provides the first comprehensive overview of international script development practices. Across 40 unique chapters, readers are guided through the key challenges, roles and cultures of script development, from the perspectives of creators of original works, those in consultative roles and those giving broader contextual case studies. The authors take us inside the writers room, alongside the script editor, between development conversations, and outside the mainstream and into the experimental. With authors spanning upwards of 15 countries, and occupying an array of roles including writer, script editor, producer, script consultant, executive, teacher and scholar, this is a truly international perspective on how script development functions (or otherwise) across media and platforms. Comprising four parts, the handbook guides readers behind the scenes of script development, exploring unique contexts, alternative approaches, specific production cultures and global contexts, drawing on interviews, archives, policy, case study research and the insider track. With its broad approach to a specialised practice, the Palgrave Handbook of Script Development is for anyone who practices, teaches or studies screenwriting and screen production. Stayci Taylor is a Lecturer in Media at RMIT University, Australia. She is an award-winning screenwriter and researcher, published widely on screenwriting, web series and creative writing. Craig Batty is Dean of Research (Creative) at the University of South Australia. He is an award-winning educator and researcher in the field of screenwriting, and is also a writer, script editor and script consultant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhetoric and Wonder in English Travel Writing, 1560-1613, shows how rhetorical invention, elocution and ethos combined to create plausible representations by generating intellectual and emotional significances which, meaningful in consensual terms, were 'consensually' true. However, some traveller-writers betrayed an unease with such representation, rooted as it was in a metaphorical epistemology out of kilter with an increasingly empiricist age. This book throws new light onto the episteme shift that ushered in modernity with its distrust of metaphor in particular and rhetoric's 'wordish descriptions' in general. In response to the empirical desiderata of scientific rationalism, traveller-writers textually or physically made their own bodies available as evidence of their encounters with wonder, thus transforming themselves into wonderful objects. The irony is that, far from dispensing with rhetoric, they merely put the accent on its more dramatic arts of gesture and action. The body's evidence could still be doctored, but its illusory truths were better able to satisfy the empirical demand for 'ocular proof'. The author's main purposes here are to complement, and sometimes counter, recent work on early modern travel literature by concentrating on its use of rhetoric to communicate meaning; and to suggest how familiarity with the workings of rhetoric and its communicative and epistemological premises may enhance readings of early modern English literature generally.
