Download or read book Teacher Empowerment and Cultural Context written by Shanthi Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher empowerment is a psychological and socio-structural motivational process that enhances teacher performance and self-expression. The current conceptualisations of Teacher Empowerment, available in extant literature, have been constructed in an Anglo-Saxon, western cultural context. There have been attempts to transfer the concept to Asian countries, but these attempts were faced with major obstacles since the underlying cultural assumptions are not the same across countries. This book treads new ground by redefining Teacher Empowerment in the cultural context of South East Asia. Using the case of Brunei Darussalam which has a unique socio-cultural make-up as a melting pot of Malay, Chinese and other Asian cultures, the book offers a unique insight how the Teacher Empowerment dynamics is played out in this context. Covering more than just empowering leadership in schools, the author explores how colleagues, parents, and students empower teachers, and how teachers empower themselves. This book is a valuable guide for educators and educational leaders and researchers in Southeast Asia and beyond, who are committed to the empowerment of teachers, and the qualitative enhancement of the field of education as a whole.
Download or read book Microcredit and women s empowerment written by Samjhana Wagle and published by Cook Communication. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micro-credit has been taken as a prominent tool for poverty alleviation and women's empowerment. This book has presented the double-edged claim of microcredit proponents that microcredit not only supports rural poor to come out of poverty, it also empowers poor rural women in particular. This book is mainly grounded on research based on Bandipur Rural Municipality of Nepal. It has made the study of women from 3 settlements of Bandipur, who had availed microcredit facilities from some microcredit providing institutions or organizations in Bandipur. The data has been analyzed through qualitative data analysis under which both descriptive and explanatory methods. The data analysis is made on the basis of caste/ethnic group. The results showed that most of the females who availed the facility of microcredit finally got socioeconomic empowerment through acquiring the access to capital, control over resources, self-esteem, confidence level, decision making power, etc. Results are varied on Dalit, Janajati and Brahmin/Chhetri women. The findings showed that microcredit has significant impact on the upliftment of socio-economic empowerment of the borrowers of Bandipur. The income pattern of the respondent women has been changed. Daily wage earning and agricultural production were the main source of income before joining the program but after joining the microcredit program the sources of income shifted to small scale business, sale of livestock product and agricultural product. Entrepreneurship in microcredit beneficiary women has been increased. Apart from the changing income pattern, role of women in decision making about the resources mobilization for household activities, participation in societal affairs has also been increased. The economic dependency had restricted women in decision making power in all the spheres not only economical but also in other family and social affairs. But it has been changed now. Since, women are capable to generate regular income from their small enterprises; their dependency on male for money is reduced. Women's confidence and social status has increased after involvement in MC programs. Microcredit, though an effective poverty alleviating instrument, is not suitable for all categories of the poor. For those trapped in chronic poverty, no assets base to protect themselves from the countless webs of shocks, microcredit can be ineffective and sometimes counterproductive. Some cases of Dalit settlement have proved it.

Download or read book Empowerment written by Kenneth McLaughlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Empowerment’ is a term in widespread use today and one that is often considered to be a self-evident good. Here, McLaughlin explores its emergence in the 1960s through to its rise in the 1990s and ubiquity in present day discourse and interrogates its social status, paying particular attention to social policy, social work and health and social care discourse. He argues that a focus on empowerment has superseded the notion of political subjects exercising power autonomously. This innovative volume: - Discusses the relationship between concepts of empowerment and power, as they have been understood historically. - Analyses changes in the conception and meaning of empowerment in relation to the shifting social and political landscape. - Acknowledges the positive impact empowerment strategies have had on those who have campaigned to be empowered and also on those who have saw their role as being to help empower others. - Highlights ways in which talk about empowerment can actually work in such a way as to further disempower those already marginalised. Critically examining how ‘empowerment’ has become embedded in contemporary social and political life, this work offers a discussion of the term’s multiple meanings, what it actually entails, and how it constructs and positions those being empowered and those empowering.
Download or read book Empowering the Earth written by Alex Begg and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging directly out of the Green movement's experience of challenging, using, generating and overcoming power in the UK, this book was written over eight years, during which the author was actively involved in Green politics, co-operative economics and non-violent direct action. It shows how power is a dynamic, living process, binding us together and building our institutions. Political action which is not based on an understanding of power is best uncoordinated and unfocused, and at worst leads to a recreation of the power structures that it sets out to undermine. This book shows how we can distinguish between different patterns of power to contrast those which threaten stability with those that enable us to live naturally and harmoniously, and demonstrates a Green strategy that works in a diverse and interconnected way to build the dynamic of empowerment into a viable social alternative.

Download or read book Punctuated Peace in Nigeria s Oil Region written by Obasesam Okoi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the extent to which peacebuilding processes such as disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration are possible in the attempt to demilitarize Nigeria’s oil region and establish a stable post-conflict environment for nurturing durable peace. The book argues that the failure of the peacebuilders to address the structural tensions at the heart of insurgency, along with competition for access to the material benefits of peacebuilding, have revived violence at repeated intervals that punctuates the progression of peace. The author’s analysis shows how the interventions pursued by peacebuilders have been successful in stabilizing the oil region by taking arms from insurgents, paying them monthly allowances, and building their capacity to reintegrate into society through a range of transformational processes. While these interventions are praiseworthy, they have transformed the political realities of peacebuilding into an economic enterprise that makes recourse to violence a lucrative endeavour as identity groups frequently mobilize insurgency targeting oil infrastructure to compel the state to enter into negotiations with them. There was little consideration for the impact corruption might have on the peacebuilding process. As corruption becomes entrenched, it fosters exclusion and anger, leading to further conflict. The book proposes pathways to positive peacebuilding in Nigeria’s oil region.
Download or read book Student Empowerment in Higher Education Reflecting on Teaching Practice and Learner Engagement written by Anjoom A. Mukadam and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2020-05-04 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student Empowerment in Higher Education brings together the accumulated knowledge and experience of many accomplished teachers and students from higher education institutions around the world, and has much to offer those who are engaged in higher education, as students, teachers or support staff. The authors offer personal reflections in teaching, learning, mentoring, assessment, hands-on activities, course design and student identities in higher education across the globe, supported by academic research and scholarship. Readers are provided with a window into tried and tested empowering practices in varying contexts, enabling them to see what works and what does not, alongside the challenges and possibilities. A distinctive feature of this book, and its paramount strength, is that it explores best practices in student empowerment, whilst reflecting on matters of teaching and learning that are familiar to students and teachers alike, and also explores practices in a variety of disciplines. The intention of these volumes, therefore, is not only to inform readers about the diverse learning and teaching approaches of the authors, but, most importantly, to facilitate processes of student empowerment and promote reflection on teaching and learning practices. "In recent decades, higher education policy discourse has persistently implied that a university education is 'delivered' to students under the impersonal banner of 'the student experience'. Not only does this commodify the diverse, individual experiences of students into one marketable product, it also creates false barriers and power dynamics between students and their teachers. In Student Empowerment in Higher Education, the students and lecturers who collaborated to write this important volume have literally blown such misleading notions out of the window! I highly recommend each varied and autonomous chapter to learn what really inspires confidence and success in university students." Professor Sarah Hayes, Professor of Higher Education Policy, University of Wolverhampton "The two volumes of Student Empowerment in Higher Education offer the reader rich and varied examples and understandings of student empowerment from around the world. The authors provide reflective accounts of learning and teaching from diverse perspectives and disciplines, which focus on many different areas of practice in higher education. It is this variety that will appeal to many readers, as the source of ideas and inspiration for numerous possible routes to empowerment. With many chapters co-authored by students and staff, the book models the collective responsibility students and staff have for enhancing student empowerment." Dr. Catherine Bovill, Senior Lecturer in Student Engagement, University of Edinburgh; Fulbright Scholar, Elon University, North Carolina, USA; Visiting Fellow (Knowledge Exchange), University of Winchester
Download or read book Community Power and Empowerment written by Brian D. Christens and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people want to help bring about changes in their neighborhoods, workplaces, and communities. Leaders and scholars of change efforts are likewise eager for insights into what makes some organizations and coalitions capable of building and exercising power. Why are some groups successful in making changes in policies and systems and in sustaining their momentum over time, while others struggle or never really get off the ground? With Community Power and Empowerment, Brian D. Christens brings the most comprehensive analysis of empowerment theory yet conducted to bear on these questions, taking aim at many of the longstanding weaknesses and ambiguities of empowerment theory, research, and practice. For example, one major hindrance is that most notions of empowerment have not been coherently connected with community power. In addition, research has emphasized psychological aspects of empowerment over organizational processes, and has neglected community empowerment processes to an even greater extent. By linking empowerment and community power, Christens constructs a holistic framework for assessing and comparing community-driven change efforts. This book offers new guidance for inquiries into outcomes and impacts of empowerment processes on health and well-being, providing a resource for researchers, organizational leaders, practitioners, and anyone interested in collective action for change.
