This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent substance abuse is the nation's #1 public health problem. It originates out of a developmental era where experimentation with the world is increasingly taking place, and where major changes in physical self and social relationships are taking place. These changes cannot be understood by any one discipline nor can they be described by focusing only on the behavioral and social problems of this age period, the characteristics of normal development, or the pharmacology and addictive potential of specific drugs. They require knowledge of the brain's systems of reward and control, genetics, psychopharmacology, personality, child development, psychopathology, family dynamics, peer group relationships, culture, social policy, and more. Drawing on the expertise of the leading researchers in this field, this Handbook provides the most comprehensive summarization of current knowledge about adolescent substance abuse. The Handbook is organized into eight sections covering the literature on the developmental context of this life period, the epidemiology of adolescent use and abuse, similarities and differences in use, addictive potential, and consequences of use for different drugs; etiology and course as characterized at different levels of mechanistic analysis ranging from the genetic and neural to the behavioural and social. Two sections cover the clinical ramifications of abuse, and prevention and intervention strategies to most effectively deal with these problems. The Handbook's last section addresses the role of social policy in framing the problem, in addressing it, and explores its potential role in alleviating it.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the testimony of Surgeon General Antonia Novello of the U.S. Public Health Service, and related materials from a congressional hearing examining underage drinking. In her opening statement, Chairwoman Patricia Schroeder reviews the incidence of underage drinking and notes the role of the advertising industry in promoting drinking. Surgeon General Novello's testimony notes the pervasiveness of underage drinking and discusses the problems created by exposing adolescents to mixed messages on drinking. Novello contrasts the health message that the use of alcohol by young people can lead to serious health consequences with the advertising messages that promote drinking. She examines the problem of labeling that makes it difficult to distinguish alcoholic from nonalcoholic beverages on store shelves; designated drivers, and teenagers who ride with drinking drivers; and adolescents' lack of knowledge about alcohol. Actions taken by the Surgeon General to combat the problem of underage drinking are reviewed, and the problems encountered in enforcing the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 are discussed. Novello describes actions taken by individual states to prevent underage drinking. The role of advertising in promoting underage drinking is emphasized throughout the document. Included in the document are a fact sheet on preventing underage drinking; the prepared statement of Michael Kavanaugh, sheriff of Roanoke County, Virginia; comments by John Calfee, associate professor of Marketing, School of Management, Boston University; and a report from the Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Book excerpt: Adolescence and adolescent states of mind have seldom captured so much attention publicly, nor have they stirred so much anxiety and disturbance privately. This long acknowledged, problematic, transitional world between childhood and adulthood is especially fraught, these days, with the assaults and pressures of contemporary culture and modern technology. The heart of the book lies in the exploration of the inner lives of these young people, whether or not they find their way to clinical services. It sets out to illuminate the sorts of things that go wrong, and how we can help to address them – the crises of identity, gender, loss, self-harm, bullying, depression, anger, suicidal impulses, anxiety, and so much more. On Adolescence: Inside Stories is intended for all those concerned with adolescence, and adolescent states of mind at whatever age or stage.

Biological changes are discussed within a social context, and the latest research is presented on key issues of our time, including changes in teenage sexual behaviours and beliefs, sexual risk-taking, body dissatisfaction, sex education, teen pregnancy and abortion. Susan Moore and Doreen Rosenthal explore the roles of parents, peers, the media, social institutions and youth culture in adolescent sexual adjustment. This volume covers topical issues ranging from the role of the internet in adolescent romance to the pros and cons of abstinence education versus harm minimization. Issues, such as whether there are male-female differences in desire, sexuality, motives for sex, and beliefs about romance are examined, along with the question of whether a sexual double standard still exists. Maladaptive aspects of sexual development, including sexual risk-taking, disease, unplanned pregnancy, and sexual coercion are also covered. This fully revised and updated second edition also addresses the crucial issues of: sexual minority adolescents the social determinants of adolescent sexuality sexual health as opposed to sexual illness. This book aims to promote sexual well-being, and argues for the importance of the adolescent period as a time for engendering healthy sexual attitudes and practices. It will be valuable reading for students in the social and behavioural sciences interested in adolescent development and the topic of sexuality, and for professionals working with young people.

Book excerpt: This Provider's Guide introduces a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate treatment program,, Pathways for Self-Discovery and Change (PSDC), which provides the specific tools necessary for improving evaluation and treatment of at-risk youth, a particularly vulnerable patient population in the justice system. Using an adolescent-focused format, this protocol identifies psychological, biological, and social factors that contribute to the onset of adolescent deviance, and establishes guidelines for delivery of a 32-session treatment curriculum designed to rehabilitate both male and female adolescents with co-occurring substance abuse and criminal conduct. Now in its Second Edition, this guide provides treatment practitioners, program evaluators, and youth services administrators with the most up to date, comprehensive, and accessible information for the treatment and rehabilitation of juvenile justice clients. It is built on theoretical and research advances in the treatment and rehabilitation of juvenile justice clients, as well as feedback over the past seven years from PSDC counselees, treatment providers, and program administrators.
