Download or read book Dismemberment in Drama Dismemberment of Drama written by Lance Norman and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-03 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dismemberment in Drama / Dismemberment of Drama is an essay collection which considers the dramatic possibility contained in the images and narratives of dismemberment frequently recurring on the western stage. The Classical Tragedies of Sophocles and Euripides, the Romanticism of Kleist, the surrealism of Artaud, and the contemporary drama of Suzan-Lori Parks and Marina Carr are just some of the fractured and fragmented bodies analyzed in this collection. Both individually and in concert the contributors ask what a dismembered body means. Such an inquiry allows them to confront dismemberment as a theoretical category which understands such twentieth-century innovations as the Theatre of Cruelty, the Epic Theatre, the Open Theater, and documentary theatre as part of a long dramatic tradition. Dismemberment in drama examines the tenuous bond between representation and the object being represented by highlighting the dismemberment of drama as a form that occurs during drama’s repeated theorizations of its own enactment. There is a conflict between disintegration and unity inherent in mimesis, theatrical phenomenology, and performance.

Download or read book Classics and Irish Politics 1916 2016 written by Isabelle Torrance and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection addresses how models from ancient Greece and Rome have permeated Irish political discourse in the century since 1916. The 1916 Easter Rising, when Irish nationalists rose up against British imperial forces, became almost instantly mythologized in Irish political memory as a turning point in the nation's history that paved the way for Irish independence. Its centenary has provided a natural point for reflection on Irish politics, and this volume highlights an unexplored element in Irish political discourse, namely its frequent reliance on, reference to, and tensions with classical Greek and Roman models. Topics covered include the reception and rejection of classical culture in Ireland; the politics of Irish language engagement with Greek and Roman models; the intersection of Irish literature with scholarship in Classics and Celtic Studies; the use of classical referents to articulate political inequalities across gender, sexual, and class hierarchies; meditations on the Northern Irish conflict through classical literature; and the political implications of neoclassical material culture in Irish society. As the only country colonized by Britain with a pre-existing indigenous heritage of expertise in classical languages and literature, postcolonial Ireland represents a unique case in the field of classical reception. This book opens a window on a rich and varied dialogue between significant figures in Irish cultural history and the Greek and Roman sources that have inspired them, a dialogue that is firmly rooted in Ireland's historical past and continues to be ever-evolving.

Download or read book Community Politics and the Peace Process in Contemporary Northern Irish Drama written by Eva Urban and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2011 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines theatre within the context of the Northern Ireland conflict and peace process, with reference to a wide variety of plays, theatre productions and community engagements within and across communities. The author clarifies both the nature of the social and political vision of a number of major contemporary Northern Irish dramatists and the manner in which this vision is embodied in text and in performance. The book identifies and celebrates a tradition of playwrights and drama practitioners who, to this day, challenge and question all Northern Irish ideologies and propose alternative paths. The author's analysis of a selection of Northern Irish plays, written and produced over the course of the last thirty years or so, illustrates the great variety of approaches to ideology in Northern Irish drama, while revealing a common approach to staging the conflict and the peace process, with a distinct emphasis on utopian performatives and the possibility of positive change.

Download or read book Dissident Dramaturgies written by Eamonn Jordan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Boston to Berlin, and from Belfast to Beijing, the performances of Irish plays have been greeted with critical and box-office acclaim. Plays by Marina Carr, Brian Friel, Marie Jones, Martin McDonagh, Frank McGuinness, Tom Murphy, Mark O'Rowe, Conor McPherson and Enda Walsh have toured extensively, and have been translated and adapted for new performance contexts. This book examines the dominant approaches and the recurrent and variable dramaturgical patterns in the writings of the contemporary generation of writers from 1980 to the present. Six very specific, dominant configurations or constructions that shape the blatant dramaturgy of Irish Theatre will be considered in individual chapters that focus the relationships between history, memory and metatheatre, how the notion of innocence is contested, the various deployments of a range of myths by contemporary playwrights, the consequences of perverting pastoral consciousness, and the implications and repercussions of storytelling to a tradition of writing. In all of the work produced both locally and abroad, Ireland and a coerced and admired notion of 'Irishness' function in part as a commodity but also as something uniquely defiant, liberating and dissident in itself.

Download or read book Perspectives on Contemporary Irish Theatre written by Anne Etienne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the notion posed by Thomas Kilroy in his definition of a playwright’s creative process: ‘We write plays, I feel, in order to populate the stage’. It gathers eclectic reflections on contemporary Irish theatre from both Irish theatre practitioners and international academics. The eighteen contributions offer innovative perspectives on Irish theatre since the early 1990s up to the present, testifying to the development of themes explored by emerging and established playwrights as well as to the (r)evolutions in practices and approaches to the stage that have taken place in the last thirty years. This cross-disciplinary collection devotes as much attention to contextual questions and approaches to the stage in practice as it does to the play text in its traditional and revised forms. The essays and interviews encourage dialectic exchange between analytical studies on contemporary Irish theatre and contributions by theatre practitioners.

Download or read book A Life of Ethics and Performance written by John Matthews and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-25 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics is, in an important sense, a matter of ‘being good’ but it is also a question about how to live a ‘good life’. This book's emphasis on the theatrical and performative and their relationship to ethics, highlights that being good is, a matter of acting good and that acting good is a question of performing (or not-performing) certain roles and duties. This book surveys the most recent work in the field of ethics and performance, organizing this research through the metaphor of ‘the good life’. Each chapter explores a question about what it means to ‘act good’ at a different point in life and thus the book moves from natality to fatality, and beyond in its meditation on the relationship between performance and life itself. In this, it offers an important contribution to the contemporary debate about the relationship between ethics, theatre and performance studies.
