Book excerpt: From stunning debut talent Sarah Jung comes a heartwarming and beautifully told story about family, planting roots, and standing tall in the face of your fears. June's father is like a goose -- he flies away for long periods of time, which means that June doesn't get to see him very often. So he is happy when Father comes home from his journeys, and happier still when the family plants a tangerine tree together and Father tells June, "Next time I am here, this tree will be bigger, and so will you." Caring for a growing sapling is a great responsibility and June takes it very seriously. When an accident happens and the tree topples over, June worries his family will change forever. But things that have fallen can be replanted, and sometimes facing our biggest fears reveals our greatest strengths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever experienced a traumatic event so impactful you felt as if the place you’d always called “home” was forever ruined? Afterwards, did you ever feel as if your faith in God and what you’d called “church” growing up was ripped wide open and being washed away? This is how Angela felt when her beloved dad’s sudden death was ruled a suicide. After years of questioning why this world is the way it is, years of wrestling with God and other sojourners here, Angela found her way to a place of peace regarding her father. It’s from that place that she’s stepping out now, more than twenty years after his death, to encourage others with the comfort she received from God. He’s the only one who never turns his back on his people—even when they feel as if life here has become too much to bear.

Download or read book Atonement written by Eleonore Stump and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of the atonement is one of the defining doctrine of Christianity. Over the course of many centuries, theologians, church forefathers, philosophers and more have proposed a huge expanse of interpretations of Christ's sacrifice for humanity, each different to the next. In this ambitious study, Eleonore Stump uses the context of this history of interpretation to reconsider the doctrine afresh with philosophical care. Whatever exactly the atonement is, it is supposed to include a solution to the problems of the human condition, especially its guilt and shame. Stump canvasses the major interpretations of the doctrine, highlighting their shortcomings as an explanation for this solution. In their place, she argues for an interpretation that is both novel whilst still using traditional theology, including Anselm's well-known account of the doctrine. Atonement is a rich exploration of the doctrine and all that it covers: love, union, guilt, shame, forgiveness, retribution, punishment, shared attention, mind-reading, empathy, and various other issues in moral psychology and ethics.
