These first books in the Fairy-tale Inheritance Series introduce a world where fairy-tale magic simmers just below the surface. First, in CINDERELLA'S DRESS you'll find: A mysterious steamer trunk. A magical dress. And one unexpected inheritance... On the home front in 1944, Kate wants to do her part for the war effort. She'd prefer filling in for the window dressers at the New York department store where she works, but her mother insists on sending her to audition for roles she never gets. When relatives arrive from war-torn Poland with a mysterious steamer trunk and an even more mysterious story, her life is about to get complicated. Kate's aunt, who is suffering from dementia, tries to convince her she is next in line to be the keeper of the wardrobe for Cinderella's family--the real Cinderella. Kate'll have to prove that she's worthy to continue the family line and keep Cinderella's dress safe from the people who want it most. How can she do all that and keep it a secret from the boy she's falling for? This might be the most important role Kate has ever auditioned for. But will she get to the truth before it's forgotten? Next, in CINDERELLA'S SHOES, you'll be taken to post WWII Europe and uncover even more shocking family secrets. It all builds to one final showdown. Can Kate stop a family feud that has lasted for centuries? Finally, in CINDERELLA'S LEGACY, you'll read the story behind the story. You'll be taken up into the Tatra Mountains in what is now modern-day Poland and meet a fairy godmother living in a meadow as she wakes up one morning to a surprise on her doorstep. Learn about the conflict in young Cinderella's village, and how she meets her fairy godmother. If you like the magic and romance of fairytale retellings, then you'll love this continuation of the Cinderella story.

Book excerpt: A Story of Her Own reviews and evaluates existing psychoanalytic theories about the 'female oedipal complex,' from early theories by Freud to contemporary writings from many theoretical frameworks. Important aspects of the female triangular complex are examined in detail: entry into the triangular phase; dynamics and conflicts of the phase, such as separation from mother, sexuality, competition, and typical defenses; guilt and superego; and the role of the female body. Specific treatment issues related to these experiences are addressed, including gender-related transferences and countertransferences.

Book excerpt: Religion is one of humanity’s most important cultural achievements, and it continues to have a great influence on people’s lives, even to this day. At the same time, however, it is a puzzling phenomenon: Religious teachings often contradict the rational insights of modern science. Numerous attempts have therefore been made throughout the history of humankind to overcome this conflict. This book presents a new interpretation method for religion based on microeconomic theory. Microeconomics is the field of economics that describes human behavior using theoretical models. In the recent past, various branches of microeconomics have emerged, each of which investigates specific aspects of human behavior. One of these branches is the economics of religion, which specializes in describing and explaining religious activities. However, the actual meaning of religious teachings and rituals has not yet been considered in these approaches. The interpretation method used in this book offers a key to understanding religious texts and rituals. For illustration purposes, examples from various world and tribal religions are presented and explained. The microeconomic exegesis enables a rational perspective on religion and can contribute to the reconciliation of faith and reason.

Book excerpt: Winner of the National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle Award "A charming book about enchantment, a profound book about fairy tales."—John Updike, The New York Times Book Review Bruno Bettelheim was one of the great child psychologists of the twentieth century and perhaps none of his books has been more influential than this revelatory study of fairy tales and their universal importance in understanding childhood development. Analyzing a wide range of traditional stories, from the tales of Sindbad to “The Three Little Pigs,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “The Sleeping Beauty,” Bettelheim shows how the fantastical, sometimes cruel, but always deeply significant narrative strands of the classic fairy tales can aid in our greatest human task, that of finding meaning for one’s life.

Book excerpt: While some see the Miss American Pageant as hokey vestige of another era, many remain enthralled by the annual Atlantic City event. And whether you love it or hate it, no one can deny the impact the contest has had on American popular culture-indeed, many reality television shows seem to have taken cues from the pageant. Founded in 1921, the Miss America Pageant has provided a fascinating glimpse into how American standards of femininity have been defined, projected, maintained, and challenged. At various times, it has been praised as a positive role model for young American women, protested as degrading to women by feminists, and shamed by scandals, such as the one caused by the Penthouse photos of Vanessa Williams in 1984. In this first interdisciplinary anthology to examine this uniquely American event, scholars defend, critique, and reflect on the pageant, grappling with themes like beauty, race, the body, identity, kitsch, and consumerism. "There She Is, Miss America" provides a fascinating examination of an enduring American icon.

'The Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow' is a collection of humorous essays with a philosophical tone about the value of things and the decisions we make. Jerome Klapka Jerome was born in Walsall, England in 1859. Both his parents died while he was in his early teens, and he was forced to quit school to support himself. In 1889, Jerome published his most successful and best-remembered work, 'Three Men in a Boat'. Featuring himself and two of his friends encountering humorous situations while floating down the Thames in a small boat, the book was an instant success, and has never been out of print. In fact, its popularity was such that the number of registered Thames boats went up fifty percent in the year following its publication.
