Book excerpt: DCZ, written in a multiple narrative style is a work of speculative eco-fiction featuring a London setting, released zoo animals, global control and a mysterious, powerful organisation. Gaia can and will solve the problem of climate change as opposed to living in the ensuing disaster. And humans are not very important in the scheme of things. They will, like all else, be accounted for in the calculations as a part of a global eco-system. This is a story of reversing and preventing the problem rather than one of living with the dire consequences of it. Except from the human perspective this is a holocaust.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally altered the global economic landscape, with the smallest and most vulnerable economies particularly hard hit. In the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, the crisis has cost lives and livelihoods. It has impacted both the demand and supply sides of the economy, posing difficult policy tradeoffs. Risks to macroeconomic stability are now growing. Each country will likely exit the crisis with an even greater need for reform. Escaping the Governance Trap: Economic Reform in the Northern Triangle provides a framework for understanding the challenges of those three Central American nations, proposing that the lack of governing capacity in each country is a crucial problem. This book argues that economic reforms can help the Northern Triangle countries escape their governance traps and identifies priority areas of economic reform. Sectors covered include fiscal policy, monetary and exchange rate policy, financial access and deterrence, and structural reforms. It also highlights the role that stakeholders like the United States can play to help in these reform efforts, and how those outcomes affect the United States and the global community. All told, Escaping the Governance Trap provides an accessible, direct account of the Northern Triangle’s economic challenges and how to fix them.

Download or read book Postwar written by Laura McEnaney and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When World War II ended, Americans celebrated a military victory abroad, but the meaning of peace at home was yet to be defined. From roughly 1943 onward, building a postwar society became the new national project, and every interest group involved in the war effort—from business leaders to working-class renters—held different visions for the war's aftermath. In Postwar, Laura McEnaney plumbs the depths of this period to explore exactly what peace meant to a broad swath of civilians, including apartment dwellers, single women and housewives, newly freed Japanese American internees, African American migrants, and returning veterans. In her fine-grained social history of postwar Chicago, McEnaney puts ordinary working-class people at the center of her investigation. What she finds is a working-class war liberalism—a conviction that the wartime state had taken things from people, and that the postwar era was about reclaiming those things with the state's help. McEnaney examines vernacular understandings of the state, exploring how people perceived and experienced government in their lives. For Chicago's working-class residents, the state was not clearly delineated. The local offices of federal agencies, along with organizations such as the Travelers Aid Society and other neighborhood welfare groups, all became what she calls the state in the neighborhood, an extension of government to serve an urban working class recovering from war. Just as they had made war, the urban working class had to make peace, and their requests for help, large and small, constituted early dialogues about the role of the state during peacetime. Postwar examines peace as its own complex historical process, a passage from conflict to postconflict that contained human struggles and policy dilemmas that would shape later decades as fatefully as had the war.

Book excerpt: Ch. 4 (p. 197-281) contains a biography of Edith Stein, who was born to a Jewish family in Breslau in 1891 and in 1922 was baptized as a Catholic. In 1933, unable to teach under the Nazi laws, she entered a Carmelite nunnery in Cologne. After the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, her superior transferred her to a nunnery in Echt in the Netherlands. In August 1942, following a protest by the Churches in the Netherlands against the deportation of Jews, Stein and her sister Rose (who also had been baptized and settled in Echt) were deported to Westerbork and then to Auschwitz, where they perished. Two of their other siblings died in Theresienstadt. In 1998 Edith Stein was canonized as a saint.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: However interesting and important the stories by his contemporaries are, there is no better place to discover the most profound inspiration of Saint Francis of Assisi than in his own writings. These prayers, poems, proverbs, rules and letters are a gold-mine for those who wish to delve into his thoroughly biblical spirituality. He reveals himself in them as being someone who was permanently touched and marked by his encounter with Christ. In brief: the seeker of God who considered his fellow-creatures as his brothers and sisters; someone who even these days still exerts an unequalled magnetism due to his radical following of Christ. However this does not mean that his biblically inspired radiance does not need to be translated to the challenges of modern life. This is because the eight centuries separating us from him form a wide chasm. In a small way, this book endeavours to contribute to the actualisation of Francis' charisma: a freely chosen life-style characterised by having no possessions as well as by courageous service and courteous respect to others. What can his biblical 'art of living' signify for the modern individual who jealously guards his or her freedom in a world marked by excessive planning and omnipresent technology, and who at the same time is usually not quite sure for whom or for what he or she is actually free?
