A remorseless sexual deviate, he went to great lengths to promote and expand his corporate interests. But sometimes a man's power can corrupt more than just himself. Todd Milton, state agent for the Montana Criminal Investigation Bureau, was no stranger to murder investigations, but who would want to kill one of the world's richest men? Or maybe it might be easier to figure out who wouldn't. From the high peaks north of Yellowstone to the quiet suburbs of New England, Todd will find help and love along the way. But will Todd's investigation into the death of a man who ground his competition under foot without a passing thought find the one step that was a step too far?

Book excerpt: The two archetypal questions of leadership are 'What' am I going to do? and 'How' will I get it done? The greatest challenge for a leader is not 'What' to do. Most leaders have enough experience and expertise to be able to differentiate their business. More difficult for leaders is the challenge of 'How' to get things done. Many leaders answer this question by defining budgets, reallocating resources, updating structures, and redefining business processes. But this is only part of the How question, the part under their direct control. Few leaders master the art of what I see as their biggest 'How' challenge: "How do I bring my people with me; how do I generate with all of them enough ownership and commitment to live the vision, implement the plans and realise the targets?" In this book 'Freedom in a Framework' Arri shares a perspective that is equally rich and pragmatic, based on more than 25 years experience of supporting leaders across the world in grappling with this question.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Social construction' is a central metaphor in contemporary social science, yet it is used and understood in widely divergent and indeed conflicting ways by different thinkers. Most commonly, it is seen as radically opposed to realist social theory. Dave Elder-Vass argues that social scientists should be both realists and social constructionists and that coherent versions of these ways of thinking are entirely compatible with each other. This book seeks to transform prevailing understandings of the relationship between realism and constructionism. It offers a thorough ontological analysis of the phenomena of language, discourse, culture and knowledge, and shows how this justifies a realist version of social constructionism. In doing so, however, it also develops an analysis of these phenomena that is significant in its own right.

Download or read book Frontline Justice written by Pascal Lévesque and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared with its civilian counterpart - which struggles with delays and uncertain results - summary military justice is efficient. From offence until outcome, 90 per cent of cases are dealt with in less than ninety days. The other side of the coin is that there is no right to representation by defence counsel, no transcript produced, and no appeal to a judge. Nine times out of ten, individuals are found guilty. For service members, consequences can include fines, reductions in rank, confinement, and sentences of up to thirty days in military jail, sometimes with a criminal conviction. Addressing important gaps in legal literature, Frontline Justice sets out to examine summary justice in Canada's military and to advocate for reform. Pascal Lévesque describes the origins, purposes, and features of the summary trial system in the Canadian Armed Forces. He then analyzes the system's benefits and flaws and the challenges it faces in maintaining discipline while respecting the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Lévesque determines that troubling aspects of the system, including the fact that lower and higher ranks are dealt with and punished differently, are clear indicators of a need for change. Criticizing current legislation, the book takes into account the latest developments in military law and jurisprudence to make concrete recommendations for an alternative model of military justice. A thought-provoking and balanced analysis, Frontline Justice seeks to remedy some of the more unfair and arcane proceedings of the Canadian military's summary trial system.

Download or read book The Normative Animal written by Neil Roughley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often claimed that humans are rational, linguistic, cultural, or moral creatures. What these characterizations may all have in common is the more fundamental claim that humans are normative animals, in the sense that they are creatures whose lives are structured at a fundamental level by their relationships to norms. The various capacities singled out by discussion of rational, linguistic, cultural, or moral animals might then all essentially involve an orientation to obligations, permissions and prohibitions. And, if this is so, then perhaps it is a basic susceptibility, or proclivity to normative or deontic regulation of thought and behavior that enables humans to develop the various specific features of their life form. This volume of new essays investigates the claim that humans are essentially normative animals in this sense. The contributors do so by looking at the nature and relations of three types of norms, or putative norms-social, moral, and linguistic-and asking whether they might all be different expressions of one basic structure unique to humankind. These questions are posed by philosophers, primatologists, behavioral biologists, psychologists, linguists, and cultural anthropologists, who have collaborated on this topic for many years. The contributors are committed to the idea that understanding normativity is a two-way process, involving a close interaction between conceptual clarification and empirical research.
