Book excerpt: This volume ventures into terrain where even the most sophisticated map fails to lead--through the mapmaker's bias. Denis Wood shows how maps are not impartial reference objects, but rather instruments of communication, persuasion, and power. Like paintings, they express a point of view. By connecting us to a reality that could not exist in the absence of maps--a world of property lines and voting rights, taxation districts and enterprise zones--they embody and project the interests of their creators. Sampling the scope of maps available today, illustrations include Peter Gould's AIDS map, Tom Van Sant's map of the earth, U.S. Geological Survey maps, and a child's drawing of the world. THE POWER OF MAPS was published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Museum, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Design.

Download or read book The Story of American Railroads written by Stewart H. Holbrook and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly comprehensive history by a self-proclaimed "low-brow" historian features more than 100 photographs and contemporary prints of America's railway system. Stewart H. Holbrook presents a dramatic, highly readable chronicle of the development of the backbone of the country's commerce and industry. Abounding in episodes of ingenuity and achievement, the growth of the railway system required constant improvements in techniques, devices, and machines, from the first wood burner that traveled on wooden rails to modern streamliners and diesel-powered giants. In addition to technological innovations, the colossal enterprise required courage and resolve to battle challenges posed by nature as well as by political maneuvering and corruption. This fascinating survey draws upon many hitherto unknown original sources and new data, in addition to firsthand accounts from hundreds of brakemen, conductors, engineers, and other railroad employees. Sound and authoritative, it constitutes a definitive history of America's railroads.

Download or read book A Full Cup written by Klare Sullivan and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 60's, my small world seemingly began to disintegrate. Customs and traditions of family life and other aspects of human existence were drastically changing. Our children no longer had the security and optimism that the older generation had known. By the 80's, my contemporaries knew that we would never recapture the magical moments with which we grew up. However, storytelling in the Deep South was alive and well, and acquaintances encouraged me to write down some of the many experiences of daily living that I talked about. That encouragement led to a weekly column in several newspapers, and I called it "From over the Hill." Recently, friends and followers of my articles advised me to put together a book of some favorites written during that time. Most of the stories are very similar to today's happenings-we are still in the 80's mode. Perhaps we can live a little, love a lot, and laugh together as we momentarily forget 9/11 and go back into time.

Download or read book Literature and Technology written by Mark L. Greenberg and published by Lehigh University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays uses recent work on literature and science to establish new ways of relating literature and language theory to writings about technology (as distinguished from science). The interdisciplinary character of these essays is further enriched by drawing upon contemporary studies of the philosophy and history of technology, which provide the context for the first essay (Mitcham and Casey). Subsequent essays examine technology from many points of view - how technology shapes texts and contexts, as well as how writers shape perspectives on technology. The essays examine texts as diverse as seventeenth-century science and twentieth-century children's literature and spy fiction. Major authors investigated include Chaucer, Blake, Romains, Pynchon, and Prigogine. Individual essays consider: Chaucer's use of mapmaking as a coercive technology (Tomasch), the Renaissance fascination with mechanical contrivances and their depiction (Knoespel), the contexts within which Boyle and his successors described the air pump (Markley), Blake's manifold interests in the technology of printing (Greenberg), Romains's development of a philosophy of poetry appropriate to early twentieth-century technology in Paris (Williams), gender issues in children's literature about machines (Lee), technology in the modern spy novel (Slade), Thomas Pynchon's mixed feelings about technology and its value (Schachterle), and the relations between postmodern fiction and the technology of thermodynamics, as developed by Nobel laureate Ilya Prigogine (Porush). The editors of Literature and Technology have been active in the formation and direction of the Society for Literature and Science. In their introduction to this collection, they consider what characterizes literature and technology as a new and fertile field for interdisciplinary study. This volume concludes with selected bibliographies of basic references in the philosophy of technology and of works devoted to the examination of the relationships between literature and technology.
