Book excerpt: Haunted by the burden of his family's traitorous past, woozy with pot, cheap wine and sex, and disturbed by a frighteningly real encounter with some family ghosts, Walter van Brunt is about to have a collision with history. It will lead Walter to search for his lost father. And it will send the story into the past of the Hudson River Valley, from the late 1960's back to the anticommunist riots of the 1940's to the late seventeenth century, where the long-hidden secrets of three families--the aristocratic van Warts, the Native-American Mohonks, and Walter's own ancestors, the van Brunts--will be revealed.

Book excerpt: When A.J. Mackinnon quits his job in Australia, he knows only that he longs to travel to the Well at the World's End, a mysterious pool on a remote Scottish island whose waters, legend has it, hold the secret to eternal youth. Determined not to fly ('It would feel like cheating'), he sets out with a rucksack, some fireworks and a map of the world and trusts chance to take care of the rest. By land and by sea, by train, truck, horse and yacht, he makes his way across the globe - and through a series of hilarious adventures. He survives a bus crash in Australia, marries a princess in Laos, is attacked by Komodo dragons and does time in a Chinese jail. The next lift - or the next near-miss - is always just a happy accident away. This is the astonishing true story of a remarkable voyage, an old-fashioned quest by a modern-day adventurer.

This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes bring to a close the only comprehensive edition of the surviving correspondence of William Morris (1834-1896), a protean figure who exerted a major influence as poet, craftsman, master printer, and designer. Volumes III and IV, taken together, give in detail the comments and observations that articulate his problematic political and artistic stands and equally problematic position within the aesthetic movement as it developed in the 1890s. Most eloquently voiced also are the complexities of his troubled marriage and his devotion to his epileptic daughter, Jenny, and his other daughter, May. But dominating all these themes, organizing and structuring them, are the Kelmscott Press and the building of Morris's important library of medieval manuscripts and early printed books. The letters record the way in which the Press becomes not only the center of Morris's aesthetic ambitions and achievements but also the site for his closest human relations and for much of his connecting with the makers of early modernism. The letters in Volumes III and IV are thoroughly annotated, and through texts and notes provide a new assessment of Morris's career. Included also, as appendices to Volume IV, are two important documents: the first, never before published, is F. S. Ellis's Valuation List of Morris's library, made after Morris's death, and the second, never before reprinted, is the text of what was to be Morris's final essay on socialism, published in April 1896. Originally published in 1996. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Download or read book The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm written by Jacob Grimm and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel," "Hansel and Gretel," and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style. For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories from the 1812 and 1815 editions. These narrative gems, newly translated and brought together in one beautiful book, are accompanied by sumptuous new illustrations from award-winning artist Andrea Dezsö. From "The Frog King" to "The Golden Key," wondrous worlds unfold—heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. Esteemed fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes offers accessible translations that retain the spare description and engaging storytelling style of the originals. Indeed, this is what makes the tales from the 1812 and 1815 editions unique—they reflect diverse voices, rooted in oral traditions, that are absent from the Grimms' later, more embellished collections of tales. Zipes's introduction gives important historical context, and the book includes the Grimms' prefaces and notes. A delight to read, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents these peerless stories to a whole new generation of readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the scientific people say that Yellowstone will erupt again, but no one knows when. Everything is still a guessing game. They say that it could be a super volcano. This is a volcano capable of producing a volcanic eruption with an ejected volume greater than 1,000 km (240 cu mi). This is thousands of times larger than normal volcanic eruptions. Super volcanoes can occur when magma in the mantle rises into the crust from a hotspot but is unable to break through the crust, and pressure builds in a large and growing magma pool until the crust is unable to contain the pressure. Such is the case for the Yellowstone Caldera. They can monitor and watch, but it is still a guessing game. I based my book on one type of eruption that may take place, which is a Plinian eruption. These eruptions are marked by their similarity to the eruption of Mount Vesuvious in AD 79. Plinian eruptions are marked by columns of gas and volcanic ash extending high into the stratosphere, a high layer of the atmosphere. The key characteristics are ejection of large amounts of pumice and very powerful continuous gas blast eruptions.

Download or read book The Well at the World s End Annotated written by WIlliam Morris and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Well at the Worlds End is the story of Ralph the youngest son of a minor King who runs away from his peaceful home to seek adventure. On his way he learns of "The Well at the World's End". Those who drink from the Well become imbued with strength, youth and immortality, but it is clear that the waters transform more than the bodies of those who drink from the well. Still the bulk of the story deals with how Ralph learns about life and good and evil along the way. Like some of the other reviewers I expected to grow tired of the medieval narrative style and the victorian morality, but then I found it harder and harder to put down. The style is not too heavy, and despite the morality it does hint at the dilemmas and difficulties Ralph struggles with to stay on an honorable path while at the same time experiencing all the wonderful new things he is exposed to after his quiet life in his father's tiny kingdom. Morris shows how Ralph struggles to understand who is good and who is evil and try to do the right thing, and doesn't always. The narrative teases the reader just as it does the hero Ralph, a King's son who is not yet a Knight. At the same time it is fascinating to see the elements of Morris's work that have been picked up by Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and even Lovecraft. It is also very compelling to read the elements in Morris's writing that come from Ariosto and Spencer and the same themes that infiltrate the art work of Waterhouse and the romantics and then picked up later by Pyle, Rackham and the Wyeths. Morris inserts the elements of the supernatural and magic very lightly, unlike the heavy handed magical elements in todays fantasy fiction.Morris's prose is much lighter than Mervyn Peake's "Titus Groan" and E.R. Eddisons "Worm Ouroboros". Though you may have to show a little fortitude in working through Morris's style if instead you think more about the imagery and Ralph's dilemmas you will find the story compelling and definitely as one reviewer wrote "haunting".

Download or read book The Brothers Grimm RLE Folklore written by Ruth Michaelis-Jena and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first modern biography of the Brothers Grimm, first published in 1970. It is a study of them in their background of late eighteenth-century and nineteenth-century Germany, and shows the position they held in their society as founders of Germanic philology, as members of the 'Göttingen Seven', and inside the circle of the German Romantics. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were pioneers in the recording of authentic traditional stories. Gradual revisions gave these tales the form in which they have come down to us. Even if more recently the custom has been to leave stories as they were told, the astonishing currency of the Grimms' collection is due largely to the brothers' editorial work. The Grimms' lasting fame, as Michaelis-Jena points out, may well rest on the fact that by their insistence on 'genuine and true recording' they turned the amateur antiquarian into the professional folklorist. Ruth Michaelis-Jena has worked for many years on the Brothers Grimm, and has had access to little known material at various libraries and museums in Germany.

Here, Bornstein bravely and wittily shares personal and unorthodox methods of survival in an often cruel world. A one-of-a-kind guide to staying alive outside the box, Hello, Cruel World is a much-needed unconventional approach to life for those who want to stay on the edge, but alive. Designed to encourage readers to give themselves permission to unleash their hearts' harmless desires, the book has only one directive: "Don't be mean." It is this guiding principle that brings its reader on a self-validating journey, which forges wholly new paths toward a resounding decision to choose life. Tenderly intimate and unapologetically edgy, Kate Bornstein is the radical role model, the affectionate best friend, and the guiding mentor all in one.
