Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Teaching and Studying Languages Mankind has long passed from the stage in which speech is used for the mere expression of physical facts and desires, to that in which language is employed as the highest tool within the grasp to paint the pictures of poetic imagination, and sway a world-wide audience to noble thoughts and deeds. Not only to satisfy the necessities of travellers in far countries has the study of language been ever desirable, but to penetrate the spirit and genius of Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Goethe, Hugo, Dante, it has become, to the cultured of every country, a necessity for the full gift of a liberal education. Since language became literature, the necessity for the mastery over other tongues than his own has forced the attention of student and of professor to the problem of the study of languages; and the great intellectual value of a complete and logical system for the mastery of tongues, if such could be found, is so apparent, that the greatest honour has always been awarded to discoverers in this region, which is still felt, however, to be to a large extent unexplored, or at least unconquered. The world has this year seen a magnificent celebration of the grand services to the cause of education rendered by Comenius. In spite of this we are still far from having definitely adopted in our school and college practice the now acknowledged principles perceived by Comenius - that education must be organic and not mechanical, that language teaching, modern and classic, should proceed by dealing with things and not with words and grammatical abstractions, and that before all else education should have direct bearing upon actual life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach and Learn Modern Languages Successfully, Especially French, and Its Teaching at School I confess my weakness. I also had deter mined to write a grammar - a grammar that should throw into the shade everything that had been previously achieved - but the sight of the voluminous catalogue disheartened me; in short, it convinced me that success in that line was impossible. I threw my pen away in despair. But, on examining the list of French works once more, an idea occurred to me, whether a good one or no, I leave to others to decide. Finding that books which give practical hints as to the method of teaching modern languages are not to be found in the said catalogue, I determined Upon supplying that want by giving, in the present little volume, my own experience, not only in teaching, but also in learning several languages, and pointing out in this manner, to teachers and students, how to teach, and how to learn modern languages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Note on the Teaching of 'English Language and Literature': With Some Suggestions But does it afford such a training? I venture to say that at present it does not. It is, I think, by no means an unusual feeling among at any rate the younger section of those who are engaged in the teaching of English subjects that all is not well with the study. It does not seem as a rule to attract the best students, and in the general opinion does not rank with most of the other divisions of the curriculum. Indeed, in some quarters it seems to be looked on almost as a sham kind of learning, an amateurish sort of business altogether, for the teaching of which real scholarship is of less importance than a good presence and fluent diction. And yet considering what the subject is: that it deals, or should deal, with the very flower of our national life, taking account of almost all the best work of the best minds of the modern world; one might naturally suppose that hardly any other subject could surpass it in interest and real importance. Again, some teachers do not feel that the results of the English course are satisfactory. The students, even granting that they are not the best, do not seem to have benefited from the time which they have spent over the study as they should have done. Their knowledge is often scrappy, they seem unable to envisage their subject from any point of View but that of the text-books in which they have studied it; they show little or no power of independent judgement, and they are often singularly blind and, indeed, indifferent to the merits of whatever does not happen to have fallen within the scope of their particular studies. With some of them, indeed, the course of literature seems to do little else but develop a power of fluent and uncritical laudation, with the help of innumerable clich's, of the particular objects of their teacher's admiration. Lastly, some of the teachers, though perhaps only a few, are not entirely satisfied with themselves and their own grasp of their subject. Some of them feel that they have not the general knowledge of the language and literature which they ought to have, and are obliged to have recourse to specializing in some particular small sub-section or period, and frankly confessing that they are not much interested in the rest. They do the best they can, often complaining of the inadequacy of the methods by which they themselves were taught, but most of them continue to follow these very methods in their own teaching. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching the People's Language The basic reading Skills which are developed during the first few years of school are clearly inadequate to meet present-day demands for more complex reading abilities. I A program of English which concentrates on the elimination of errors in usage and punctuation, without regard for radio and motion-picture messages and for accounts in daily papers, is as futile as King Canute's orders in the face of the tide. The teaching of reading and of English must aim to improve and foster communication and must make effective use of the varied means through which communication takes place. Who is to be responsible if we are to have a language program in America commensurate with our opportunity and our neces sity? The National Council of Teachers of English has stoutly emphasized discussion of controversial questions, wide reading, introduction to international literature, teaching in terms of individual differences, and study of the nature Of language. Despite this effort, there is an overwhelming amount of teaching today which is far removed from the needs we have described, and which, by a false emphasis, is actually harmful. The follow ing suggestions are advanced by the writers as practical steps in carrying forward a program to improve language instruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiological Notes on Primary Education and the Study of Language In modern times education has been recognized to be something more than an elegant luxury, designed exclusively for the benefit of the "upper classes." It is a force, and a potent and indisputable means, not only for the training but for the evocation of forces. It is able, not only to convey information, but to increase power. It is not simply a social convention, but a real means for attaining real ends. The final ends of education are efficiency and repose. The educated person is he who knows how to get what he wants, and how to enjoy it when he has got it. When a "higher education" is demanded, for any class of persons - as women, - it means that it has become desirable to train their faculties for more difficult work than that traditionally assigned to them, and also that it is desirable to enable them to get more enjoyment out of any work that they do. The necessary correlative of the possession of powers is the opportunity for their exercise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Is Modern Language Teaching a Failure?, Vol. 8 True it undoubtedly is that our boys and girls are, on the average, some two years behind those of France and Germany in common book-learning. We shall perhaps be able to pursue our subject with a clearer understanding if we turn aside for a moment to consider the origin of this backwardness. The blame has sometimes been put, and with some justice, upon our migratory habits and upon the heterogeneous character of our population. But there are other and more fundamental causes three, especially, call for more extended examination. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Serial and Oral Method, to impress the elements of language on the mind, makes use, First, of three out of five of the Senses: it makes use of Hun mo in the Oral Exercises; of sight in the reading exercises, and of sight and touch combined, in the written exercises. The writing of phrases, - which employs the sense of Touch as well as that of Sight, and which concentrates attention strongly is one of the most efiicient means of impressing on the memory. As the other two Senses cannot be emp oyed in the study of language, all the material avenues to the mind, which can he enlisted in this work, are resorted to by the present Method. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Series of d104-Books on the English Language Nothing in school is usually so poorly taught as Composition. This is the uniform testimony of those conversant with the subject. Yet it would be difficult to name a branch that equals it in practical value. The ability to express one's knowledge readily and clearly, which is only another name for skill in Composition, both helps in acquiring knowledge, and multiplies almost indefinitely the value of it when acquired. The scholar who has this skill can thereby learn faster every other branch of study, and at the same time can turn every other branch to greater account. Why should a part of education of such primary importance be so generally neglected? Is there any inherent difficulty in teaching Composition, which can justify this neglect? It is my assured conviction, on the contrary, that there is no branch which can be taught with greater ease, or with more entire certainty of success. The great mistake in the matter is that the study is not begun soon enough. Teachers wait till a scholar is twelve or fourteen years old, and then, all at once, without any previous training, tell him to write a Composition. They might as well tell him to make a steam-engine. Exercises in Composition should begin as soon as a child begins to read and write, and they should at first be of the simplest possible character, such as any child can write who can write his own name. Oral work gives to the pupil a working vocabulary, and the ability to use it in accordance with good usage. Writ ten work gives to the pupil the ability to write sentences expressing his thoughts logically. To gain this ability a few steps are necessary. First - Have the pupils copy script. Second - Have the pupils copy print in script form. Third - Have the pupils write from memory. Fourth - Show the pupils a picture or an object and have them write their thoughts in simple sentences.
