Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Teaching and Studying Languages Mankind has long passed from the stage in which speech is used for the mere expression of physical facts and desires, to that in which language is employed as the highest tool within the grasp to paint the pictures of poetic imagination, and sway a world-wide audience to noble thoughts and deeds. Not only to satisfy the necessities of travellers in far countries has the study of language been ever desirable, but to penetrate the spirit and genius of Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Goethe, Hugo, Dante, it has become, to the cultured of every country, a necessity for the full gift of a liberal education. Since language became literature, the necessity for the mastery over other tongues than his own has forced the attention of student and of professor to the problem of the study of languages; and the great intellectual value of a complete and logical system for the mastery of tongues, if such could be found, is so apparent, that the greatest honour has always been awarded to discoverers in this region, which is still felt, however, to be to a large extent unexplored, or at least unconquered. The world has this year seen a magnificent celebration of the grand services to the cause of education rendered by Comenius. In spite of this we are still far from having definitely adopted in our school and college practice the now acknowledged principles perceived by Comenius - that education must be organic and not mechanical, that language teaching, modern and classic, should proceed by dealing with things and not with words and grammatical abstractions, and that before all else education should have direct bearing upon actual life. Download or read book The Art of Teaching Spanish written by Rafael Salaberry and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2006-12-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of Teaching Spanish explores in-depth the findings of research in second language acquisition (SLA) and other language-related fields and translates those findings into practical pedagogical tools for current—and future—Spanish-language instructors. This volume addresses how theoretical frameworks affect the application of research findings to the teaching of Spanish, how logistical factors affect the way research findings can be applied to teach Spanish, and how findings from Spanish SLA research would be applicable to Spanish second language teaching and represented in Spanish curricula through objectives and goals (as evidenced in pedagogical materials such as textbooks and computer-assisted language learning software). Top SLA researchers and applied linguists lend their expertise on matters such as foreign language across curriculum programs, testing, online learning, the incorporation of linguistic variation into the classroom, heritage language learners, the teaching of translation, the effects of study abroad and classroom contexts on learning, and other pedagogical issues. Other common themes of The Art of Teaching Spanish include the rejection of the concept of a monolithic language competence, the importance of language as social practice and cultural competence, the psycholinguistic component of SLA, and the need for more cross-fertilization from related fields.

Download or read book Modern Languages Across the Curriculum written by Michael Grenfell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-01-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out the agenda for the future of modern language teaching in schools. It aims to look beyond the dominant methods of second language teaching to a new approach emphasising the integration of language learning within the wider curriculum. Through research and case studies from the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium and Finland, the book shows how teachers and policy makers are increasingly moving towards a system where second languages are taught through other curriculum subjects, rather than alongside them. Key areas covered are: * recent trends and issues in the teaching and learning of modern foreign languages * the rationale for integrating languages across the curriculum * how cross-curricular language teaching is developing across Europe * practical materials and useful ideas for teachers and policy makers This timely book will interest all foreign language teachers, particularly those on in-service or higher level degree courses. It will also be useful reading for student teachers and educators, and policy makers, internationally.
